The design of structural steel members has developed over the past century from a simple approach involving a few basic properties of steel and elementary mathematics to a more sophisticated treatment demanding a thorough knowledge of structural and material behavior. Steel Structures:Design and Behavior, 5/e strives to present in a logical manner the theoretical background needed for developing and explaining design requirements.  Beginning with coverage of background material, including references to pertinent research, the development of specific formulas used in the AISC Specifications is followed by a generous number of design examples explaining in detail the process of selecting minimum weight members to satisfy given conditions.

This book introduces the applications, theory, and algorithms of linear and nonlinear optimization, with an emphasis on the practical aspects of the material. Its unique modular structure provides flexibility to accommodate the varying needs of instructors, students, and practitioners with different levels of sophistication in these topics. The succinct style of this second edition is punctuated with numerous real-life examples and exercises, and the authors include accessible explanations of topics that are not often mentioned in textbooks, such as duality in nonlinear optimization, primal-dual methods for nonlinear optimization, filter methods, and applications such as support-vector machines. Part I of Linear and Nonlinear Optimization, Second Edition provides fundamentals that can be taught in whole or in part at the beginning of a course on either topic and then referred to as needed. Part II on linear programming and Part III on unconstrained optimization can be used together or separately, and Part IV on nonlinear optimization can be taught without having studied the material in Part II. In the preface the authors suggest course outlines that can be adjusted to the requirements of a particular course on both linear and nonlinear optimization, or to separate courses on these topics. Three appendices provide information on linear algebra, other fundamentals, and software packages for optimization problems. A supplemental website offers auxiliary data sets that are necessary for some of the exercises.

Continuum Mechanics for Engineers, Third Edition provides engineering students with a complete, concise, and accessible introduction to advanced engineering mechanics. The impetus for this latest edition was the need to suitably combine the introduction of continuum mechanics, linear and nonlinear elasticity, and viscoelasticity for a graduate-level course sequence. An outgrowth of course notes and problems used to teach these subjects, the third edition of this bestselling text explores the basic concepts behind these topics and demonstrates their application in engineering practice.

Presents Material Consistent with Modern Literature: A new rearranged and expanded chapter on elasticity more completely covers Saint-Venant’s solutions. Subsections on extension, torsion, pure bending and flexure present an excellent foundation for posing and solving basic elasticity problems. The authors’ presentation enables continuum mechanics to be applied to biological materials, in light of their current importance. They have also altered the book’s notation―a common struggle for many students―to better align it with modern continuum mechanics literature. This book addresses students’ need to understand the sophisticated simulation programs that use nonlinear kinematics and various constitutive relationships. It includes an introduction to problem solution using MATLAB®, emphasizing this language’s value in enabling users to stay focused on fundamentals.

This book provides information that is useful in emerging engineering areas, such as micro-mechanics and biomechanics. With an abundance of worked examples and chapter problems, it carefully explains necessary mathematics as required and presents numerous illustrations, giving students and practicing professionals an excellent self-study guide to enhance their skills. Through a mastery of this volume’s contents and additional rigorous finite element training, they will develop the mechanics foundation necessary to skillfully use modern, advanced design tools.

This book provides a comprehensive review of drilling technologies in the polar regions, from the portable drilling equipment for shallow sampling and coring, to heavy drilling equipment for deep onshore and offshore drilling. Particular attention is given to safe drilling methods in permafrost. In recent years, interest in drilling in the polar regions has increased under the pressure of the geopolitical “rush” and the undiscovered resource potential. In addition, borehole monitoring of permafrost thermal states is urgently needed to obtain evidence of climate change. The book focuses on the latest drilling technologies but also discusses the historical development of sampling, and drilling tools and devices, over the last 60–70 years providing valuable insights into a way forward and future possibilities.

This book provides a comprehensive guide to the design of foundations for tall buildings. After a general review of the characteristics of tall buildings, various foundation options are discussed followed by the general principles of foundation design as applied to tall buildings. Considerable attention is paid to the methods of assessment of the geotechnical design parameters, as this is a critical component of the design process. A detailed treatment is then given to foundation design for various conditions, including ultimate stability, serviceability, ground movements, dynamic loadings and seismic loadings. Basement wall design is also addressed. The last part of the book deals with pile load testing and foundation performance measurement, and finally, the description of a number of case histories. A feature of the book is the emphasis it places on the various stages of foundation design: preliminary, detailed and final, and the presentation of a number of relevant methods of design associated with each stage.

Dean G. Duffy ... 595 pages - Language: ‎ English - Publisher: Chapman and Hall/CRC; 5th edition (January, 2022).

In the four previous editions the author presented a text firmly grounded in the mathematics that engineers and scientists must understand and know how to use. Tapping into decades of teaching at the US Navy Academy and the US Military Academy and serving for twenty-five years at (NASA) Goddard Space Flight, he combines a teaching and practical experience that is rare among authors of advanced engineering mathematics books. This edition offers a smaller, easier to read, and useful version of this classic textbook. While competing textbooks continue to grow, the book presents a slimmer, more concise option. Instructors and students alike are rejecting the encyclopedic tome with its higher and higher price aimed at undergraduates.

To assist in the choice of topics included in this new edition, the author reviewed the syllabi of various engineering mathematics courses that are taught at a wide variety of schools. Due to time constraints an instructor can select perhaps three to four topics from the book, the most likely being ordinary differential equations, Laplace transforms, Fourier series and separation of variables to solve the wave, heat, or Laplace's equation. Laplace transforms are occasionally replaced by linear algebra or vector calculus. Sturm-Liouville problem and special functions (Legendre and Bessel functions) are included for completeness. Topics such as z-transforms and complex variables are now offered in a companion book, Advanced Engineering Mathematics: A Second Course by the same author. MATLAB is still employed to reinforce the concepts that are taught. Of course, this Edition continues to offer a wealth of examples and applications from the scientific and engineering literature, a highlight of previous editions. Worked solutions are given in the back of the book.
