Katta G. Murty ... 502 pages - Publisher: Springer; 2010 edition (March 14, 2010)
Language: English - ASIN: B008BA5X7Q

Linear programming (LP), modeling, and optimization are very much the fundamentals of OR, and no academic program is complete without them. No matter how highly developed one’s LP skills are, however, if a fine appreciation for modeling isn’t developed to make the best use of those skills, then the truly ‘best solutions’ are often not realized, and efforts go wasted.

Katta Murty studied LP with George Dantzig, the father of linear programming, and has written the graduate-level solution to that problem. While maintaining the rigorous LP instruction required, Murty's new book is unique in his focus on developing modeling skills to support valid decision making for complex real world problems. He describes the approach as 'intelligent modeling and decision making' to emphasize the importance of employing the best expression of actual problems and then applying the most computationally effective and efficient solution technique for that model.

From Back Cover: Optimization for Decision Making: Linear and Quadratic Models is a first-year graduate level text that illustrates how to formulate real world problems using linear and quadratic models; how to use efficient algorithms – both old and new – for solving these models; and how to draw useful conclusions and derive useful planning information from the output of these algorithms. While almost all the best known books on LP are essentially mathematics books with only very simple modeling examples, this book emphasizes the intelligent modeling of real world problems, and the author presents several illustrative examples and includes many exercises from a variety of application areas.

Additionally, where other books on LP only discuss the simplex method, and perhaps existing interior point methods, this book also discusses a new method based on using the sphere which uses matrix inversion operations sparingly and may be well suited to solving large-scale LPs, as well as those that may not have the property of being very sparse. Individual chapters present a brief history of mathematical modeling; methods for formulating real world problems; three case studies that illustrate the need for intelligent modeling; classical theory of polyhedral geometry that plays an important part in the study of LP; duality theory, optimality conditions for LP, and marginal analysis; variants of the revised simplex method; interior point methods; sphere methods; and extensions of sphere method to convex and nonconvex quadratic programs and to 0-1 integer programs through quadratic formulations. End of chapter exercises are provided throughout, with additional exercises available online.

Continuum Mechanics for Engineers, Third Edition provides engineering students with a complete, concise, and accessible introduction to advanced engineering mechanics. The impetus for this latest edition was the need to suitably combine the introduction of continuum mechanics, linear and nonlinear elasticity, and viscoelasticity for a graduate-level course sequence. An outgrowth of course notes and problems used to teach these subjects, the third edition of this bestselling text explores the basic concepts behind these topics and demonstrates their application in engineering practice.

Presents Material Consistent with Modern Literature: A new rearranged and expanded chapter on elasticity more completely covers Saint-Venant’s solutions. Subsections on extension, torsion, pure bending and flexure present an excellent foundation for posing and solving basic elasticity problems. The authors’ presentation enables continuum mechanics to be applied to biological materials, in light of their current importance. They have also altered the book’s notation―a common struggle for many students―to better align it with modern continuum mechanics literature. This book addresses students’ need to understand the sophisticated simulation programs that use nonlinear kinematics and various constitutive relationships. It includes an introduction to problem solution using MATLAB®, emphasizing this language’s value in enabling users to stay focused on fundamentals.

This book provides information that is useful in emerging engineering areas, such as micro-mechanics and biomechanics. With an abundance of worked examples and chapter problems, it carefully explains necessary mathematics as required and presents numerous illustrations, giving students and practicing professionals an excellent self-study guide to enhance their skills. Through a mastery of this volume’s contents and additional rigorous finite element training, they will develop the mechanics foundation necessary to skillfully use modern, advanced design tools.

Soil-Structure Interaction is a challenging multidisciplinary subject which covers several areas of Civil Engineering. Virtually every construction is connected to the ground and the interaction between the artefact and the foundation medium may affect considerably both the superstructure and the foundation soil. The Soil-Structure Interaction problem has become an important feature of Structural Engineering with the advent of massive constructions on soft soils such as nuclear power plants, concrete and earth dams. Buildings, bridges, tunnels and underground structures may also require particular attention to be given to the problems of Soil-Structure Interaction. Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction is prominent in Earthquake Engineering problems. The complexity of the problem, due also to its multidisciplinary nature and to the fact of having to consider bounded and unbounded media of different mechanical characteristics, requires a numerical treatment for any application of engineering significance. The Boundary Element Method appears to be well suited to solve problems of Soil- Structure Interaction through its ability to discretize only the boundaries of complex and often unbounded geometries. Non-linear problems which often arise in Soil-Structure Interaction may also be treated advantageously by a judicious mix of Boundary and Finite Element discretizations.

Pseudo-static analysis is still the most-used method to assess the stability of geotechnical systems that are exposed to earthquake forces. However, this method does not provide any information about the deformations and permanent displacements induced by seismic activity. Moreover, it is questionable to use this approach when geotechnical systems are affected by frequent and rare seismic events. Incidentally, the peak ground acceleration has increased from 0.2-0.3 g in the seventies to the current value of 0.6-0.8 g. Therefore, a shift from the pseudo-static approach to performance-based analysis is needed.

Over the past five years considerable progress has been made in Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering Design (EGED). The most recent advances are presented in this book in 6 parts. The evaluation of the site amplification is covered in Part I of the book. In Part II the evaluation of the soil foundation stability against natural slope failure and liquefaction is treated. In the following 3 Parts of the book the EGED for different geotechnical systems is presented as follows: the design of levees and dams including natural slopes in Part III; the design of foundations and soil structure interaction analysis in Part IV; underground structures in Part V. Finally in Part VI, new topics like the design of reinforced earth retaining walls and landfills are covered.

This comprehensive introduction to rock mechanics treats the basics of rock mechanics in a clear and straightforward manner and discusses important design problems in terms of the mechanics of materials. This extended second edition includes an additional chapter on rock bursts and bumps, a part on basic dynamics, and numerous additional examples and exercises throughout the chapters. Developed for a complete class in rock engineering, Design Analysis in Rock Mechanics, Second Edition uniquely combines the design of surface and underground rock excavations and addresses: Rock slope stability in surface excavations, from planar block and wedge slides to rotational and toppling failures + Shaft and tunnel stability, ranging from naturally supported openings to analysis and design of artificial support and reinforcement systems + Entries and pillars in stratified ground + Three-dimensional caverns, with an emphasis on cable bolting and backfill + Geometry and forces of chimney caving, combination support, and trough subsidence + Rock bursts and bumps in underground excavations, with a focus on dynamic phenomena and on fast and sometimes catastrophic failures. The numerous exercises and examples familiarize the reader with solving basic practical problems in rock mechanics through various design analysis techniques and their applications. Supporting the main text, appendices provide supplementary information about rock, joint, and composite properties, rock mass classification schemes, useful formulas, and an extensive literature list. The large selection of problems at the end of each chapter can be used for homework assignments. Explanatory and illustrative in character, this volume is suited for courses in rock mechanics, rock engineering and geological engineering design for undergraduate and first-year graduate students in mining, civil engineering, and applied earth sciences. Moreover, it will form a good introduction to the subject of rock mechanics for earth scientists and engineers from other disciplines.
