This Standard covers the direct design of buried one-cell precast reinforced concrete box sections for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, storm water and drainage, and to serve as tunnels. The design and analysis method accounts for the interaction between the box sections and soil envelope in calculating loads, pressure distributions, moment, thrust and shear in the box section, and includes a procedure for calculating the required reinforcement. Load effects are determined separately for each loading. The structural design of one-cell precast reinforced concrete box sections is based on a limits state design procedure that accounts for strength and serviceability criteria and is consistent with the procedures outlined in Section 17 of the AASHTO Standard Specification for Highway Bridges. The design criteria include: structural aspects, such as flexure, thrust, and shear strengths; handling and installation; fatigue limits; and crack width control. The design of a one-cell precast reinforced concrete box section is based on the assumption that specified design bedding and installation requirements will be achieved during construction of the installation. Owners and engineers will find this Standard useful in preparing contract documents based on the direct design method.

Learning and Generalization provides a formal mathematical theory for addressing intuitive questions such as: How does a machine learn a new concept on the basis of examples? • How can a neural network, after sufficient training, correctly predict the outcome of a previously unseen input? • How much training is required to achieve a specified level of accuracy in the prediction? • How can one identify the dynamical behaviour of a nonlinear control system by observing its input-output behaviour over a finite interval of time?

In its successful first edition, A Theory of Learning and Generalization was the first book to treat the problem of machine learning in conjunction with the theory of empirical processes, the latter being a well-established branch of probability theory. The treatment of both topics side-by-side leads to new insights, as well as to new results in both topics. This second edition extends and improves upon this material, covering new areas including: • Support vector machines. • Fat-shattering dimensions and applications to neural network learning. • Learning with dependent samples generated by a beta-mixing process. • Connections between system identification and learning theory. • Probabilistic solution of 'intractable problems' in robust control and matrix theory using randomized algorithm. Reflecting advancements in the field, solutions to some of the open problems posed in the first edition are presented, while new open problems have been added. Learning and Generalization (second edition) is essential reading for control and system theorists, neural network researchers, theoretical computer scientists and probabilist.

Concrete has traditionally been known as a material used widely in the construction of roads, bridges and buildings. Since cost effectiveness has always been one of the more important aspects of design, concrete, when reinforced and/or prestressed, is finding more use in other areas of application such as floating marine structures, storage tanks, nuclear vessel containments and a host of other structures. Because of the demand for concrete to operate under different loading and environmen tal conditions, increasing attention has been paid to study concrete specimens and structure behavior. A subject of major concern is how the localized segregation of the constituents in concrete would affect its global behavior. The degree of nonhomogeneity due to material property and damage. by yielding and/or cracking depends on the size scale and loading rate under consideration. Segregation or clustering of aggregates at the macroscopic level will affect specimen behavior to a larger degree than it would to a large structure such as a dam. Hence, a knowledge of concrete behavior over a wide range of scale is desired. The parameters governing micro-and macro-cracking and the techniques for evaluating and observing the damage in concrete need to be better understood. This volume is intended to be an attempt in this direction. The application of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics to concrete is discussed in several of the chapters.

Accelerating economic development and urbanization has led to engineers becoming increasingly ambitious, carrying out excavations in more difficult soils, so that excavations are deeper and more extensive. These complex conditions require advanced analysis, design methods and construction technologies. Most books on general foundation engineering introduce basic analysis and design of excavation, but do not usually deal with analysis and design in practice. This book covers both areas, introducing methods currently used in modern engineering, which can readily be applied to analysis and design in actual excavations. Based on interaction between research results, analysis and teaching experience, the book is suitable for both teachers and engineers in advanced analysis and design. Each chapter ends with a series of problems and solutions, making it equally useful as a textbook for senior undergraduate and graduate levels.

Rebar Cage Construction and Safety: Best Practices presents guidelines for the safe handling of steel reinforcing-bar (rebar) cages throughout the design, fabrication, and erection process. The focus is on rebar cages used for large, cast-in-place concrete columns in a variety of settings, including bridge piers, elevated highway sections, and high-rise buildings. These cages are inherently unstable, usually held together by tie-wire alone. They are challenging to fabricate, to lift from the horizontal to the vertical position, and to support in the temporary condition until concrete is cast. Engineered temporary support systems, such as bracing or cable-guy systems, can mitigate the instability of standing rebar cages and resist lateral loads, ensuring better safety for the iron workers tasked with climbing the cages. Topics include: Overview of rebar cages; organizational management for rebar cages; construction engineering; checklists of best practices for construction; and summary, conclusions, and recommendations. This volume describes best practices for construction engineering and construction practice regarding rebar cages. It will be useful to construction engineers working with large columns for the first time as well as construction contractors looking to establish policies and procedures related to rebar column safety.

This treatise contains topics on Solid Mechanics, the Theory of Slender Members and an Introduction to the Theory of Structures, usually taught in the disciplines of Strength of Materials of most Engineering courses, such as Civil, Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering. In relation to the most widely known treatises on Mechanics and Strength of Materials, a greater scientific exactness and an extra emphasis on the theoretical justification of the topics explained may be stressed.  Axioms and non-demonstrated simplifying hypotheses, which are common in this kind of book, are avoided. The depth of the explanation is at an intermediate level between those works and treatises based on a mathematical approach to the Theory of Elasticity and Continuum Mechanics. However, the topics are always introduced from a physical point of view, which is fundamental for an Engineer, and are anchored on over 300 figures of high graphical quality.

This is a modern treatment of the linearized theory of elasticity, which is presented as a specialization of the general theory of continuum mechanics. It includes a comprehensive introduction to tensor analysis, a rigorous development of the governing field equations with an emphasis on recognizing the assumptions and approximations in herent in the linearized theory, specification of boundary conditions, and a survey of solution methods for important classes of problems. Two- and three-dimensional problems, torsion of noncircular cylinders, variational methods, and complex variable methods are covered. This book is intended as the text for a first-year graduate course in me chanical or civil engineering. Sufficient depth is provided such that the text can be used without a prerequisite course in continuum mechanics, and the material is presented in such a way as to prepare students for subsequent courses in nonlinear elasticity, inelasticity, and fracture mechanics. Alter natively, for a course that is preceded by a course in continuum mechanics, there is enough additional content for a full semester of linearized elasticity.

The mechanisms by which buildings and infrastructures degrade are complex, as are the procedures and methods for inspection and for rehabilitation. This book examines the various problems caused by non-uniform deformation changes, poor durability, and natural and human disasters such as earthquakes and fire. Attention is given to the causes and mechanisms of the deterioration. General procedures and commonly used techniques for inspection and evaluation of existing infrastructures are introduced. The desk study, destructive test, and non-destructive test are discussed – in particular the newly developed non-destructive methods for deterioration monitoring. The book then moves on to conventional renovation techniques such as patch and steel plate strengthening, which meet the requirements of normal practice. Special attention is paid to compatibility between repair materials and degraded materials. Fibrous composite materials are then introduced as a basis for innovative repair techniques, and different fibre and matrix properties are outlined, as are newly developed inorganic binders as a matrix for fibrous composites. Finally, advanced rehabilitation techniques using fibrous composite are described. Fundamental issues such as bonding and failure mechanisms are then discussed in detail. Fibrous composite strengthening techniques for beam, wall, column and slabs are covered, including shear strengthening, flexural strengthening, and fillet winding, as are codes of practice for retrofitting with fibrous composites. This caters to students and academics world-wide and serves as a "tool book" for concrete and structural engineering professionals.

In this distinctive text, author Ever Barbero focuses on the introduction to composite materials design and its fundamental concepts. The logical order of topic presentation on composites is a major strength of the text. The text is so well written that any engineering student can easy understand the fundamentals of composites without having prior knowledge of composites. Design content is distributed throughout the book in a form that attracts the reader into the design rather than the mathematical complexity that usually exists in mechanics of composites. This book would be my first choice to adopt to teach the fundamentals of composites to a class of mainly undergraduate students.

Covers the probabilistic finite element model based on Bayesian statistics with applications to aeronautical and mechanical engineering: Finite element models are used widely to model the dynamic behaviour of many systems including in electrical, aerospace and mechanical engineering. The book covers probabilistic finite element model updating, achieved using Bayesian statistics. The Bayesian framework is employed to estimate the probabilistic finite element models which take into account of the uncertainties in the measurements and the modelling procedure. The Bayesian formulation achieves this by formulating the finite element model as the posterior distribution of the model given the measured data within the context of computational statistics and applies these in aeronautical and mechanical engineering.

Probabilistic Finite Element Model Updating Using Bayesian Statistics contains simple explanations of computational statistical techniques such as Metropolis-Hastings Algorithm, Slice sampling, Markov Chain Monte Carlo method, hybrid Monte Carlo as well as Shadow Hybrid Monte Carlo and their relevance in engineering. Key features: Contains several contributions in the area of model updating using Bayesian techniques which are useful for graduate students. Explains in detail the use of Bayesian techniques to quantify uncertainties in mechanical structures as well as the use of Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques to evaluate the Bayesian formulations. The book is essential reading for researchers, practitioners and students in mechanical and aerospace engineering.

The premixing method involves adding a small amount of cement to the soil used in reclamation. The cement reacts with the water in the soil to produce a stronger, non-liquifying material for construction. The premixing method can therefore reduce construction time, as the counter-measure work is carried out simultaneously with the reclamation process. In addition, the resultant material has enhanced bearing capacity, and there is a reduction in earth pressure due to the increase in cohesion. This book examines the premixing method in detail and is essential reading for coastal engineers, hydrologists, or construction engineers working in soft soil areas.

The first edition of Rock Mechanics and Engineering bridged the gap between scientific research on rock mechanics and practical engineering. It was resolutely aimed at giving practical information to geologists, engineering geologists and engineers. Emphasis was placed on the lessons to be learnt from the study of case histories, with the Malpasset Dam rupture and the large Vajont rock slide amongst those described. In this second, enlarged edition the author continues to emphasise aspects of rock mechanics. Modern efforts at establishing an engineering classification of rocks are summarised and considerable attention is given to the Austrian tunnelling method. Firm in his belief that there is no better way to study the subject than by the detailed analysis of case histories, Dr Jaeger has incorporated a number of new ones, for example the discussion on the engineering classification of jointed rock masses and the required rock support is illustrated by descriptions of the second Gotthard Tunnel and the design of the third, much larger tunnel.

This groundbreaking undergraduate textbook on modern Standard English grammar is the first to be based on the revolutionary advances of the authors' previous work, The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language (2002). The analyses defended there are outlined here more briefly, in an engagingly accessible and informal style. Errors of the older tradition of English grammar are noted and corrected, and the excesses of prescriptive usage manuals are firmly rebutted in specially highlighted notes that explain what older authorities have called 'incorrect' and show why those authorities are mistaken. This book is intended for students in colleges or universities who have little or no previous background in grammar, and presupposes no linguistics. It contains exercises, and will provide a basis for introductions to grammar and courses on the structure of English not only in linguistics departments but also in English language and literature departments and schools of education.
