This text is an introduction to the dynamics of active structures and to the feedback control of lightly damped flexible structures; the emphasis is placed on basic issues and simple control strategies that work.

Now in its third edition, more chapters have been added, and comments and feedback from readers have been taken into account, while at the same time the unique premise of bridging the gap between structure and control has remained.  Many examples and problems bring the subject to life and take the audience from theory to practice.

The book has chapters dealing with some concepts in structural dynamics; electromagnetic and piezoelectric transducers; piezoelectric beam, plate and truss; passive damping with piezoelectric transducers; collocated versus non-collocated control; active damping with collocated systems; vibration isolation; state space approach; analysis and synthesis in the frequency domain; optimal control; controllability and observability; stability; applications; tendon control of cable structures; active control of large telescopes; and semi-active control. The book concludes with an exhaustive bibliography and index.

This book is intended for structural engineers who want to acquire some background in vibration control; it can be used as a textbook for a graduate course on vibration control or active structures.
A solutions manual is available through the publisher to teachers using this book as a textbook.

Dams and Earthquakes deals with the association of earthquakes and large artificial lakes, particularly on the part that pore pressure plays in inducing earthquakes. The book also contains methods for recording seismic activity, before, during, and after the filling of reservoir dams through the installation of a network of portable seismographs. The text assesses the parameters and macroseismic effects of the Koyna earthquake in India in December 1967, as well as the instrumental and macroseismic data showing that the Koyna earthquake is a multiple seismic event. The book investigates the geology, hydrology, and seismicity of seismic reservoir sites, including three cases of induced seismicity after fluid injections in deep wells. A possible correlation between the reservoir level or volume of the injected fluid and the tremor frequency exists. The characteristic seismic features of reservoir associated earthquakes can reflect changes in the mechanical properties of rock masses near the reservoirs. The book also investigates the part played by increased pore-fluid pressures in triggering the earthquakes at Denver, Rangely, Kariba, Kremasta and Koyna. The UNESCO Working Group on "Seismic Phenomena Associated with Large Reservoirs" recommends the adoption of a two-phase planning in instrumental studies and surveys at sites to be used for large reservoirs. The book can be beneficial for meteorologists, environmentalists, geologists, civil engineers, structural engineers, or for officers of river and lake authorities.

Smart structures that contain embedded piezoelectric patches are loaded by both mechanical and electrical fields. Traditional plate and shell theories were developed to analyze structures subject to mechanical loads. However, these often fail when tasked with the evaluation of both electrical and mechanical fields and loads. In recent years more advanced models have been developed that overcome these limitations.

Plates and Shells for Smart Structures offers a complete guide and reference to smart structures under both mechanical and electrical loads, starting with the basic principles and working right up to the most advanced models. It provides an overview of classical plate and shell theories for piezoelectric elasticity and demonstrates their limitations in static and dynamic analysis with a number of example problems. This book also provides both analytical and finite element solutions, thus enabling the reader to compare strong and weak solutions to the problems.

Key features: Compares a large variety of classical and modern approaches to plates and shells, such as Kirchhoff-Love , Reissner-Mindlin assumptions and higher order, layer-wise and mixed theories
introduces theories able to consider electromechanical couplings as well as those that provide appropriate interface continuity conditions for both electrical and mechanical variables
considers both static and dynamic analysis. Accompanied by a companion website hosting dedicated software MUL2 that is used to obtain the numerical solutions in the book, allowing the reader to reproduce the examples given as well as solve problems of their own.

The models currently used have a wide range of applications in civil, automotive, marine and aerospace engineering. Researchers of smart structures, and structural analysts in industry, will find all they need to know in this concise reference. Graduate and postgraduate students of mechanical, civil and aerospace engineering can also use this book in their studies.

Yang H. Huang ... During the past several years I have been engaged in applied research related to the stability analysis of slopes. This research was supported by the Institute for Mining and Minerals Research, University of Kentucky, in response to the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977, which requires stability analysis for refuse dams, hollow fills, and spoil banks created by surface mining. The results of the research have been published in several journals and reports and also presented in a number of short courses. Both the simplified and the computerized methods of stability analysis, as developed from this research, have been widely used by practicing engineers throughout Ken tucky for the application of mining permits. The large number of out-of-state participants in the short courses indicates that the methods developed have widespread applications. This book is a practical treatise on the stability analysis of earth slopes. Special emphasis is placed on the utility and application of stablity formulas, charts, and computer programs developed recently by the author for the analy sis of human-created slopes. These analyses can be used for the design of new slopes and the assessment of remedial measures on existing slopes. To make the book more complete as a treatise on slope stability analysis, other methods of stability analysis, in addition to those developed by the author, are briefly discussed. It is hoped that this book will be a useful reference, class room text, and users' manual for people interested in learning about stability analysis.

Is this book for me?: If you aspire to becoming a full time forex trader, then this is the book for you. Even if your dream is perhaps more modest, and you simply want to have a second income trading the forex markets, then again, this book is for you.

What will I learn?: It has been written with one clear objective. To explain how and why the currency markets move in the way they do - the forces, the factors and the manipulators.

Many aspiring traders, simply do not realize that the forex market sits at the heart of the financial world, which when you think about it logically, is really common sense. After all, this is the biggest money market in the world, and if the financial markets are about one thing, they are about money. Making it, protecting it, or increasing the return.

It’s no surprise therefore, that the forex market connects all the others. Put simply, the forex market is the ultimate barometer of risk.

How will it help me?: So how will this book help me to become a better forex trader? Well, in several ways!

First, you will discover how changes in market sentiment in the primary markets of commodities, stocks, bonds and equities, are then reflected in the currency markets. This is something which often surprises novice traders. After all, why look at a stock index, or the price of gold, or a bond market? The answer is very simple. It is in these markets that you will find all the clues and signals, which then reveal money flow. After all, the financial markets are all about risk. In other words, higher returns for higher risk, or lower returns for lower risk.

It really is that simple. And yet, how many forex traders ever consider associated markets? The answer is very few. After reading the book, you will be one of those enlightened traders who truly understands money flow and risk, and your confidence as a trader will grow exponentially as a result.

The next thing you will learn is that trading in one dimension or using one trading technique, is rather limiting. You have probably met people who trade, who then make a bold statement such as: ‘I only trade using the fundamentals’ or perhaps that ‘technical analysis is a self fulfilling prophecy’.

Please do NOT buy this book if..

This is NOT another book explaining forex trading strategies. In fact there are none at all, surprising given the book's length. If this is what you are looking for, please DO NOT buy this book.

But do if this is you.......

It has been written for two specific audiences. The first is the novice forex trader, for whom this is a new market. The second is the forex trader who has attempted to trade in foreign exchange, but struggled, and has been left confused by the apparent random and chaotic behavior of this volatile market.

Whilst the forex market is a complex mix, it is not complicated, once you understand the people, their motives and the currencies themselves. Even those markets such as bonds, which few traders ever understand, are explained very simply.

Equally important is the concept of change. Indeed you may have other books, written many years ago and explaining how the forex market works. As you will discover, the rule book has been torn up. No longer is this a simple market of trending currency pairs. This all changed in 2007/2008, and with it the forex world changed too!

And here are some more reasons....
Long gone are the days when currency pairs meandered their way higher and lower in long term trends, driven by interest rate differentials. To take advantage, you need to understand the forces which now drive the markets.

A Three Dimensional Approach To Forex Trading will empower you with knowledge. Knowledge and confidence go hand in hand. Confidence breeds success, and success breeds money, which will then flow from reading the book.

Forex For Beginners is the prequel to my first two books, A Three Dimensional Approach to Forex Trading, and A Complete Guide to Volume Price Analysis. It is your primer to the world of forex. It has been written to lay the foundations and provide the framework for getting started in the world of forex, in what I believe is the correct way. My other books then build on what you will learn here, to further develop your trading skills and knowledge.

What I try to do in all my books, is to show you how to apply that knowledge to help you become a more confident trader. After all, learning is all well and good, but if we are not taught how to apply that knowledge in a practical way, then it is of little use. It is the application of knowledge that empowers, and this is what I have tried to do here, and in my online training rooms, and all my books.

There are of course many books about forex trading. What is different about this book, is the focus on those aspects of trading which I believe are fundamental. After all, there are only two questions we need to answer when considering a position in the market:-
    • What is the risk on this trade - high, medium or low?
    • What is the financial risk on this trade?
The first is the hardest question to answer, and the book will explain in detail the analysis and approach to use, in order to answer this question with confidence. The second question is more straightforward and is answered provided you have an understanding of risk, money management and position sizing in relation to your trading capital. Again, this is covered in detail in the book. As the tag line on the front cover says 'What you need to know to get started, and everything in between' which really sums up what you will learn.

The book explains everything, from the pure mechanics to the trading methodology that I advocate, and which I have used in all my own trading and investing for over 17 years. Forex For Beginners is also dedicated to all those traders who have asked me to write such an introduction, based on my knowledge and my methodology. This book is for you.

Although the use of composites has increased in many industrial, commercial, medical, and defense applications, there is a lack of technical literature that examines composites in conjunction with concrete construction. Fulfilling the need for a comprehensive, explicit guide, Reinforced Concrete Design with FRP Composites presents specific information necessary for designing concrete structures with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites as a substitute for steel reinforcement and for using FRP fabrics to strengthen concrete members. In a reader-friendly, design-oriented manner, this book discusses the analysis, design, durability, and serviceability of concrete members reinforced with FRP. The authors first introduce the elements that constitute composites-the structural constituent and matrix-and discuss how composites are manufactured. Following an examination of the durability of FRP composites that contain fibers, such as glass, carbon, or aramid, the book illustrates how FRP external reinforcement systems (FRP-ER) can be used for enhancing the strength and stiffness of concrete structures using theory and design principles. The concluding chapter concentrates on serviceability aspects of concrete members internally reinforced with FRP. An excellent resource of design and construction practices, Reinforced Concrete Design with FRP Composites is a state-of-the-art reference on concrete members reinforced with FRP.

Structural Eurocodes are a suite of design codes which will harmonize technical specifications for building and civil engineering works across Europe. Their introduction in March 2010 required the withdrawal of more than 50 British Standards. The change has been described as 'the single most important change to construction standards ever'. It is expected that Eurocodes will not just dominate building design in the UK and mainland Europe, but also have a major impact on many other parts of the world. For consulting engineers, the transition in structural design procedures from a British Standard to the replacement Eurocode constitutes a major programme of work for any construction material. Concise Eurocodes: Geotechnic Design assists consulting engineers in this task, aiding them in their transition from the previous standards to the new Eurocodes, by providing a briefer and more accessible presentation of the design procedures associated with EC 7 Geotechnic Design.

The purpose of this book is to explain the philosophy set out in Eurocode 7, the new European code of practice for geotechnical design, and, by means of series of typical examples, to show how this philosophy is used in practice. This book is aimed at: • practising engineers, to assist them to carry out geotechnical designs to Eurocode 7 using the limit state design method and partial factors; • lecturers and students on courses where design to Eurocode 7 is being taught. It is envisaged that practising engineers, using this book to assist them carry out geotechnical designs to Eurocode 7, will have access to the prestandard version of Eurocode 7, ENV 1997 -I, so the authors have concentrated on the main principles and have not provided a commentary on all the clauses. However sufficient detail has been included in the book to enable it to be used on its own by those learning the design principles who may not have access to Eurocode 7. For example, the values of the partial factors and the principal equations given in Eurocode 7 have been included and these are used in the design examples in this book. To assist the reader, the numbering, layout and titles of the chapters closely follow those presented in Eurocode 7.

Available textbooks, handbooks, various publications and papers give widely different approaches for design of raft foundations. These approaches make their own assumptions and deal with ideal raft, symmetrical in shape and loading. In actual practice rafts are rarely so. A structural designer engaged in the design of raft foundations finds it hard to select the method that can be carried out within the time and cost available for design and give adequate safety and economy. This book covers complete design of raft foundations including piled rafts, starting from their need, type, all the approaches suggested so far in published literature, effect of assumptions made and values of variables selected, on the design values of stresses, and brings out the limitations of these approaches using actually constructed rafts. Results of studies carried out by the author are summarised and final recommendations given. Solved examples are included for each of the methods recommended. Comprehensive treatment of the subject makes the book helpful to the design engineers, engineering teachers, students and even those who are engaged in further research.

Graph theory gained initial prominence in science and engineering through its strong links with matrix algebra and computer science. Moreover, the structure of the mathematics is well suited to that of engineering problems in analysis and design. The methods of analysis in this book employ matrix algebra, graph theory and meta-heuristic algorithms, which are ideally suited for modern computational mechanics. Efficient methods are presented that lead to highly sparse and banded structural matrices. The main features of the book include: application of graph theory for efficient analysis; extension of the force method to finite element analysis; application of meta-heuristic algorithms to ordering and decomposition (sparse matrix technology); efficient use of symmetry and regularity in the force method; and simultaneous analysis and design of structures.

This handbook is a collection of elasticity solutions. Many of the results presented here cannot be found in textbooks and are available in scientific articles only. Some of them were obtained in the closed form quite recently. The solutions have been thoroughly checked and reduced to a "user friendly" form. Every effort has been made to keep the book free of misprints. The theory of elasticity is a mature field and a large number of solutions are ava- able. We had to make choices in selecting material for this book. The emphasis is made on results relevant to general solid mechanics and materials science appli- tions. Solutions related to structural mechanics (beams, plates, shells, etc.) are left out. The content is limited to the linear elasticity. We are grateful to B. Nuller for several clarifications concerning the contact pr- lem and to V. Levin for suggestions on Eshelby's problem. We also appreciate a n- ber of remarks and comments made by L. Germanovich, I. Sevostianov, O. Zharii and R. Zimmerman. We are particularly indebted to E. Karapetian for a substantial help in putting the material together.

A new analytical method that uses the capacity axis of a section to determine its minimum capacity for biaxial bending as well as provide the reference for equilibrium of external and internal forces has been developed. Introducing this method, Structural Analysis: The Analytical Method illustrates the procedures for predicting the capacities of circular and rectangular sections in concrete and steel materials.

By applying basic mathematics to the standard principles in structural analysis, the author derived for the first time all the equations required for solving the true capacity of circular and rectangular sections in structural design. Previous authors have been unable to employ basic mathematics and thus resorted to approximate methods, such as the standard interaction formula for biaxial bending or more sophisticated methods illustrated in current literature on the subject of determining the capacity of above structural sections.

The book begins with a discussion of the capacities of rectangular and circular footing foundation for a given allowable soil-bearing pressure followed by the author’s latest integration of the Boussinesq’s elastic equation for the dispersion of surface loads in determining the exact average pressure to use in the standard soil settlement formula. The author provides all the equations and tabulated values of key point’s capacities of commercially-produced steel pipe, rectangular tubing, and steel I-sections. He then lists the derived equations for the determination of the ultimate strength capacity curve of reinforced concrete columns and concrete-filled tubular columns without using the rectangular stress block method of analysis.

Elucidating an elegant, straightforward, and precise method, thus limiting guesswork, this book makes it easier to confirm the adequacy and safety of designs by direct comparison of the external loads to the internal capacities of circular and rectangular sections in structural analysis and design.

Rocscience Settle 3D v2.016 [Size: 28 MB] ... Settle3D is a 3-dimensional program for the analysis of vertical consolidation and settlement under foundations, embankments and surface loads. The program combines the simplicity of one-dimensional analysis with the power and visualization capabilities of more sophisticated three-dimensional programs.

You can quickly create complex soil profiles and loading conditions, and view results in 3-dimensions. Modeling can be staged, and time-dependent consolidation analysis can be performed including primary and secondary consolidation (creep) at user defined time intervals. A variety of linear and non-linear material types can be modeled. Groundwater elevation can be staged and horizontal and vertical drainage conditions can be specified. Circular, rectangular or polygonal load shapes can be defined with uniform or variable load magnitudes, and flexible or rigid foundations. Loading can be staged and applied at any depth (e.g. to simulate piles or raft foundations). Excavations can be defined and loads applied within excavated areas. A special embankment designer allows you to easily define multi-stage layered embankments. Back analysis options allow you to determine the pre-load fill height or time required to achieve a given settlement. Settlement, stress and pore pressure are computed throughout the 3-dimensional volume, and results can be contoured along any horizontal or vertical plane, or plotted along any line. Settlement deformation can be viewed in 3-dimensions, magnified by a user-defined scale factor. Data presentation is highly interactive, and contours and graphs are updated in real time as you change the data type, depth or location. Results can be exported to Excel with a single mouse click.
