Rock Characterisation, Modelling and Engineering Design Methods contains the contributions presented at the 3rd ISRM SINOROCK Symposium (Shanghai, China, 18–20 June 2013). The papers contribute to the further development of the overall rock engineering design process through the sequential linkage of the three themes of rock characterisation, modelling and design methods, including feedback from the construction process itself. In addition, they enhance the interaction between the rock mechanics community in China and the rock mechanics communities in other countries. Rock Characterisation, Modelling and Engineering Design Methods not only describes the current state-of-the-art in rock characterisation, modelling and design, it also covers the manifold aspects of rock mechanics and rock engineering. The book will be of interest to professionals, engineers and academics involved in the theoretical and practical aspects of rock mechanics and engineering.

Distributed in the East European countries, China, Northern Korea, Cuba, Vietnam and Mongolia by Academia, Prague, Czechoslovakia This book is based on the efficient subsoil model introduced by the authors in 1977 and applied in the last ten years in the design of foundations. From the designer's point of view, the model considerably reduces the extent of the calculations connected with the numerical analysis of soil-structure interaction. The algorithms presented are geared for use on mini- and personal computers and can be used in any numerical method. A special chapter is devoted to the implementation of the model in the NE-XX finite element program package, illustrated with diagrams, tables and practical examples. Besides presenting the energy definition and general theory of both 2D and 3D model forms, the book also deals with practical problems such as Kirchhoff's and Mindlin's foundation plates, interaction between neighbouring structures, actual values of physical constants of subsoils and natural frequencies and shapes of foundation plates. Today, researchers and engineers can choose from a wide range of soil models, some fairly simple and others very elaborate. However, the gap which has long existed between geomechanical theory and everyday design practice still persists. The present book is intended to suit the practical needs of the designer by introducing an efficient subsoil model in which the surrounding soil is substituted by certain properties of the structure-soil interface. When a more precise solution is required, a more sophisticated model form can be used. Its additional degrees of deformation freedom can better express the behaviour of layered or generally unhomogeneous subsoil. As a result, designers will find that this book goes some way towards bridging the above-mentioned gap between structural design theory and day-to-day practice.

The International Symposium on "Coastal Geotechnical Engineering in Practice (IS-Yokohama 2000)" was held from 20 to 22 September 2000 in Yokohama, Japan and sponsored both by TC-30 of ISSMGE on "Coastal Geotechnical Engineering" and by the Japanese Geotechnical Society (JGS). This symposium attracted 310 participants from many countries and IS-Yokohama 2000 is remembered as a successful event for gathering valuable information and experiences from various researchers and case studies on soft ground engineering technology in coastal areas. During the symposium participants heard invited leading experts present lectures and reports and had a chance to meet with representatives of various research fields of interest. As a fulfilment of the promis made during the symposium, a second volume was produced after the conference with contributed paper of those presentations in keynote addresses, special lectures, project reports and special discussion sessions, with the hope that this will be a valuable reference for engineers, academics, consultants and those who are interested in Coastal Geotechnical Engineering.

Dam and levee remediation has become more prevalent since the start of the twenty-first century. Given the vastness and complexity of the infrastructures involved, keeping up with maintenance needs is very difficult. Major surges in repair are usually triggered by nature’s wake-up calls, such as hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes. The challenge has been to develop methods that ensure safe, effective, reliable, and robust solutions for current and future remediation issues. Specialty Construction Techniques for Dam and Levee Remediation presents the state of practice in North American dam and levee remediation as it relates to the use of specialty geotechnical construction techniques, such as anchors, grouting, cutoff (diaphragm) walls, and deep mixing.

The book focuses on the actual construction processes, describing design and performance aspects of remediation where appropriate. Chapters deal with the application of drilling and grouting methods, methods to install mix-in-place (category 2) cutoff structures, excavated and backfilled trenches (category 1), composite cutoff walls, and stabilization using prestressed rock anchors. The book also provides a comprehensive guide to dam and levee instrumentation, covering planning, operating principles, data management, staffing, and automation. As an educational and salutary example of ineffective efforts, the final chapter presents a case history of a series of remediations performed on a single project, which ultimately proved unsuccessful. A wide range of methods has been developed in response to the challenges that arise in the dam and levee remediation arena and the need for a competitive edge. These new methods are designed and monitored using state-of-the-art techniques, giving rise to the emergence of new intensity and initiative in this field. This book captures this transformation by examining the theory and practice of contemporary remedial techniques, using recent U.S. case histories to provide knowledge and inspiration to readers, both in North America and around the world.
