The Manual presents a unified design approach to geotechnical engineering and provides guidance across a range of activities, from traditional foundation design to slope stability, retaining wall design, investigation and reporting. Many engineers will be unfamiliar with the way Eurocode 7 approaches geotechnical engineering , and the ambition for the new Manual is to provide them with an accessible route into designing in accordance with the new codes. More specifically the Manual is designed to help engineers move from a permissible stress approach to that of the limit state design philosophy. The Manual is primarily addressed to those carrying out calculations by hand or using standard geotechnical software, and relates only to the design of buildings to be constructed in the United Kingdom. It includes background to the Eurocode system, an extensive explanation of notation and terminology used in the system, a checklist for using the guide, and a suggested framework for the interaction of structural and geotechnical engineering actions.
