Written by an author with more than 25 years of field and academic experience, Soil Improvement and Ground Modification Methods explains ground improvement technologies for converting marginal soil into soil that will support all types of structures. Soil improvement is the alteration of any property of a soil to improve its engineering performance. Some sort of soil improvement must happen on every construction site. This combined with rapid urbanization and the industrial growth presents a huge dilemma to providing a solid structure at a competitive price. The perfect guide for new or practicing engineers, this reference covers projects involving soil stabilization and soil admixtures, including utilization of industrial waste and by-products, commercially available soil admixtures, conventional soil improvement techniques, and state-of-the-art testing methods. Contents: Conventional soil improvement techniques and state-of-the-art testing methods + Methods for mitigating or removing the risk of liquefaction in the event of major vibrations + Structural elements for stabilization of new or existing construction industrial waste/by-products, commercially available soil + Innovative techniques for drainage, filtration, dewatering, stabilization of waste, and contaminant control and removal.

This practical handbook of properties for soils and rock contains in a concise tabular format the key issues relevant to geotechnical investigations, assessments and designs in common practice. There are brief notes on the application of the tables. These data tables are compiled for experienced geotechnical professionals who require a reference document to access key information. There is an extensive database of correlations for different applications. The book should provide a useful bridge between soil and rock mechanics theory and its application to practical engineering solutions. The initial chapters deal with the planning of the geotechnical investigation and the classification of the soil and rock properties, after which some of the more used testing is covered. Later chapters show the reliability and correlations that are used to convert that data in the interpretative and assessment phase of the project. The final chapters apply some of these concepts to geotechnical design. The emphasis throughout is on application to practice. This book is intended primarily for practicing geotechnical engineers working in investigation, assessment and design, but should provide a useful supplement for postgraduate courses. It evolved from the need to have a "go to" reference book which has both breadth and depth of information to apply immediately to projects. To keep to a handbook size one has to compress/restrict details to a few key bullet points – but a comprehensive reference list provides the "appendix" for additional information if required. This 2nd edition keeps to that format but contains updated information and adjustments that take into account feedback received since initial publication.

This book provides a comprehensive guide to the design of foundations for tall buildings. After a general review of the characteristics of tall buildings, various foundation options are discussed followed by the general principles of foundation design as applied to tall buildings. Considerable attention is paid to the methods of assessment of the geotechnical design parameters, as this is a critical component of the design process. A detailed treatment is then given to foundation design for various conditions, including ultimate stability, serviceability, ground movements, dynamic loadings and seismic loadings. Basement wall design is also addressed. The last part of the book deals with pile load testing and foundation performance measurement, and finally, the description of a number of case histories. A feature of the book is the emphasis it places on the various stages of foundation design: preliminary, detailed and final, and the presentation of a number of relevant methods of design associated with each stage.

The book contains chapters of structured approach to problem solving in mathematical analysis on an intermediate level. It follows the ideas of G.Polya and others, distinguishing between exercises and problem solving in mathematics. Interrelated concepts are connected by hyperlinks, pointing toward easier or more difficult problems so as to show paths of mathematical reasoning. Basic definitions and theorems can also be found by hyperlinks from relevant places. Problems are open to alternative formulations, generalizations, simplifications, and verification of hypotheses by the reader; this is shown to be helpful in solving problems. The book presents how advanced mathematical software can aid all stages of mathematical reasoning while the mathematical content remains in foreground. The authors show how software can contribute to deeper understanding and to enlarging the scope of teaching for students and teachers of mathematics. Discovering Mathematics: A Problem-Solving Approach to Analysis with Mathematica and Maple provides a constructive approach to mathematical discovery through innovative use of software technology. Interactive Mathematica and Maple notebooks are integral to this books’ utility as a practical tool for learning. Interrelated concepts, definitions and theorems are connected through hyperlinks, guiding the reader to a variety of structured problems and highlighting multiple avenues of mathematical reasoning. Interactivity is further enhanced through the delivery of online content (available at extras.springer.com), demonstrating the use of software and in turn increasing the scope of learning for both students and teachers and contributing to a deeper mathematical understanding. This book will appeal to both final year undergraduate and post-graduate students wishing to supplement a mathematics course or module in mathematical problem-solving and analysis. It will also be of use as complementary reading for students of engineering or science, and those in self-study.

Advanced Engineering Mathematics with MATLAB, Fourth Edition builds upon three successful previous editions. It is written for today’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) student. Three assumptions under lie its structure: (1) All students need a firm grasp of the traditional disciplines of ordinary and partial differential equations, vector calculus and linear algebra. (2) The modern student must have a strong foundation in transform methods because they provide the mathematical basis for electrical and communication studies. (3) The biological revolution requires an understanding of stochastic (random) processes. The chapter on Complex Variables, positioned as the first chapter in previous editions, is now moved to Chapter 10. The author employs MATLAB to reinforce concepts and solve problems that require heavy computation. Along with several updates and changes from the third edition, the text continues to evolve to meet the needs of today’s instructors and students.

Theories of surface waves develop since the end of XIX century and many fundamental problems like existence, phase and group velocities, attenuation (quality factor), mode conversion, etc. have been, in part successfully, solved within the framework of such simple models as ideal fluids or linear elasticity. However, a sufficiently complete presentation of this subject, particularly for solids, is still missing in the literature. The sole exception is the book of I. A. Viktorov which contains an extensive discussion of fundamental properties of surface waves in homogeneous and stratified linear elastic solids with particular emphasis on contributions of Russian scientists. Unfortunately, the book has never been translated to English and its Russian version is also hardly available. Practical applications of surface waves develop intensively since a much shorter period of time than theories even though the motivation of discoverers of surface waves such as Lord Rayleigh stems from their appearance in geophysics and seismology. Nowadays the growing interest in practical applications of surface waves stem from the following two main factors: surface waves are ideal for developing relatively cheap and convenient methods of nondestructive testing of various systems spanning from nanomaterials.
