As known, each bridge presents a unique set of design, construction, and maintenance challenges. The designer must determine the appropriate methods and level of refinement necessary to design and analyze each bridge on a case-by-case basis. The Innovative Bridge Design Handbook: Construction, Rehabilitation, and Maintenance encompasses the state of the art in bridge design, construction, maintenance, and safety assessment. Written by an international group of experts, this book provides innovative design approaches used in various parts of the world and explores concepts in design, construction, and maintenance that will reduce project costs and increase structural safety and durability. Furthermore, research and innovative solutions are described throughout chapters.

The Innovative Bridge Design Handbook: Construction, Rehabilitation, and Maintenance brings together the specific knowledge of a bevy of experts and academics in bridge engineering in the areas of design, assessment, research, and construction. The handbook begins with an analysis of the history and development of bridge aesthetics and design; various types of loads including seismic and wind loads are then described, together with fatigue and fracture. Bridge design based on material such as reinforced concrete, prestressed reinforced concrete, steel and composite, timber, masonry bridges is analyzed and detailed according to international codes and standards. Then bridge design based on geometry, such as arch bridges, girders, cable stayed and suspension bridges, is illustrated. This is followed by a discussion of a number of special topics, including integral, movable, highway and railway bridges, together with seismic component devices, cables, orthotropic decks, foundations, and case studies. Finally, bridge construction equipment, bridge assessment retrofit and management, bridge monitoring, fiber-reinforced polymers to reinforce bridges, bridge collapse issues are covered.

Loads including seismic and wind loads, fatigue and fracture, local effects + Structural analysis including numerical methods (FEM), dynamics, risk and reliability, innovative structural typologies + Bridge design based on material type: RC and PRC, steel and composite, timber and masonry bridges + Bridge design based on geometry: arch bridges, girders, cable stayed and suspension bridges + Special topics: integral, movable, highway, railway bridges, seismic component devices, cables, orthotropic decks, foundations + Construction including construction case studies, construction equipment, bridge assessment, bridge management, retrofit and strengthening, monitoring procedures.

Soft Clay Engineering and Ground Improvement covers the design and implementation of ground improvement techniques as applicable to soft clays. This particular subject poses major geotechnical challenges in civil engineering. Not only civil engineers, but planners, architects, consultants and contractors are now aware what soft soils are and the risks associated with development of such areas. The book is designed as a reference and useful tool for those in the industry, both to consultants and contractors. It also benefits researchers and academics working on ground improvement of soft soils, and serves as an excellent overview for postgraduates. University lecturers are beginning to incorporate more ground improvement topics into their curricula, and this text would be ideal for short courses for practicing engineers. It includes several examples to assist a newcomer to carry out preliminary designs.

The three authors, each with dozens of years of experience, have witnessed and participated in the rapid evolvement of ground improvement in soft soils. In addition, top-tier professionals who deal with soft clays and ground improvement on a daily basis have contributed, providing their expertise in dealing with real-world problems and practical solutions.

Statistics for Business Students (ISBN: 978-1-63795-762-2) brings the teaching of statistics into the 21st century. Rather than focusing on mathematics behind formulae, this textbook uses two most used platforms to teach the subject, and these are Microsoft Excel and IBM SPSS. The emphasis is on applications, understanding what the functions deliver, and how to interpret the results.

A brief content of this 756-page book is: Preface + Chapter 1 Data Visualisation + Chapter 2 Descriptive statistics + Chapter 3 Probability distributions + Chapter 4 Sampling distributions + Chapter 5 Point and interval estimates + Chapter 6 Hypothesis testing + Chapter 7 Parametric hypothesis tests + Chapter 8 Nonparametric tests + Chapter 9 Linear correlation and regression analysis + Chapter 10 Introduction to time series data, long term forecasts and seasonality + Chapter 11 Short and medium-term forecasts + Appendices + Index.

The presence of thick deposits of soft clay combined with the effects of ground subsidence cause problems for engineering constructions for lowland areas such as the Central Plain (Chao Phraya) of Thailand. The ground subsidence is caused by the excessive extraction of ground water. To mitigate such natural geological hazards, different soil/ground improvement methods have been studied, namely: mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) embankments, granular or sand compaction piles, vertical drains, and the lime/cement deep mixing method. In view of their proven performance, durability, constructibility, short time schedule, and low costs, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) or earth reinforcement techniques seem to be very suitable and favorable above-ground soil improvement methods of embankment fills on subsiding ground. This method can be most appropriately combined with the various belowground improvement techniques such as vertical drains, sand compaction piles, and the lime/cement deep mixing method. Thus, the combined above-ground soil improvement with below-ground subsoil improvement schemes can be a viable alternative to the existing method of supporting earth embankments and landfills with precast concrete piles, which may prove detrimental and more expensive in a subsiding environment.

This book presents the application of a comparatively simple nonparametric regression algorithm, known as the multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) surrogate model, which can be used to approximate the relationship between the inputs and outputs, and express that relationship mathematically. The book first describes the MARS algorithm, then highlights a number of geotechnical applications with multivariate big data sets to explore the approach’s generalization capabilities and accuracy. As such, it offers a valuable resource for all geotechnical researchers, engineers, and general readers interested in big data analysis.

This monograph updates a subject area covered in the 1982 classic text used around the world, Ground Motions and Soil Liquefaction During Earthquakes, by H. Bolton Seed and I.M. Idriss. The new publication will fill a need for a thorough synthesis in one accessible resource for students, practicing engineers, and other professionals of progress in the study of liquefaction since 1982. The following areas are covered: Fundamentals of liquefaction behavior: a framework for a common understanding of the development and limitations of various engineering analytical procedures. Liquefaction triggering analysis: methods for evaluating the potential for liquefaction triggering. Consequences and mitigation of liquefaction: examples of lateral spreading and post-liquefaction settlement analyses, the use of factors of safety in engineering practice, mitigation strategies, and methods for ground improvement. Cyclic softening of saturated clays: engineering procedures for evaluating the potential performance of cohesive fine-grained soils. Three of the 136 figures are in color, illustrating comparisons of liquefaction analysis procedures.
