Rock falls can be a public safety issue. This book provides comprehensive information on identification of these hazards, and design and construction of protection methods. Rock Fall Engineering describes first, the theoretical background to rock fall behavior in terms of the impact and trajectory phases of rock falls, and second, how this information is applied to modeling of rock falls and the design of ditches, fences and sheds. The theory of rock fall behavior is verified by comparing the calculations with five carefully documented case studies. The book covers four main topics as follows: Describes causes of rock falls, including geology, climate and topography, and provides detailed documentation on rock fall impacts and trajectories at five sites with a wide variety of topographic and geologic features - Discusses theory of impact mechanics, and its application to velocity and energy changes during impacts and trajectories - Reviews methods of modeling rock fall events, and presents analyses for the five case studies - Examines rock fall protection in terms of selecting appropriate method(s) for site conditions, and design principles in which the objective is to absorb impact energy in an efficient manner. This book, which contains many worked examples, is of interest to practitioners and researchers working in the fields of geological engineering and natural hazards.

Computer Methods and Recent Advances in Geomechanics contains the proceedings (abstracts book 472 pages + full paper USB-drive 2052 pages) of the 14th International Conference of the International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics (Kyoto, Japan, 22-25 September, 2014). The contributions cover computer methods, material modeling and testing, applications to a wide range of geomechanical issues, and recent advances in various areas that may not necessarily involve computer methods, including: Development and usage of new materials; Constitutive modeling of materials including deformation, damage and failure; Verification of existing and new constitutive models;Micro-macro correlations of material response including non-destructive testing; New techniques for material and site characterization; Computer-aided engineering and expert system; Innovative construction using new materials and computer methods; Design and rehabilitation of infrastructure; Use of system and optimization procedures, and Remote sensing. Computer Methods and Recent Advances in Geomechanics will be of interest to researchers and engineers involved in geotechnical mechanics and geo-engineering.

Through its inclusion of specific applications, The Mathematical Theory of Elasticity, Second Edition continues to provide a bridge between the theory and applications of elasticity. It presents classical as well as more recent results, including those obtained by the authors and their colleagues. Revised and improved, this edition incorporates additional examples and the latest research results.

New to the Second Edition: Exposition of the application of Laplace transforms, the Dirac delta function, and the Heaviside function + Presentation of the Cherkaev, Lurie, and Milton (CLM) stress invariance theorem that is widely used to determine the effective moduli of elastic composites + The Cauchy relations in elasticity + A body force analogy for the transient thermal stresses + A three-part table of Laplace transforms + An appendix that explores recent developments in thermoelasticity.

Although emphasis is placed on the problems of elastodynamics and thermoelastodynamics, the text also covers elastostatics and thermoelastostatics. It discusses the fundamentals of linear elasticity and applications, including kinematics, motion and equilibrium, constitutive relations, formulation of problems, and variational principles. It also explains how to solve various boundary value problems of one, two, and three dimensions.

Maintaining the Safety of our Dams and Reservoirs covers a wide range of topics which are of direct relevance to all who work with dams and reservoirs, whether in the UK or abroad, be they owners, maintainers, designers or constructors. The changes to the UK s legislative frameworks for dam safety are covered, as are examples of the many environmental factors to be taken into account, not just for the construction of new dams but also for alterations and repairs. Several papers provide examples of the planning or construction of new dams, while many deal with upgrades and repairs to existing dams, some as the results of unforeseen incidents.

The first book to focus on risk and uncertainty in ground conditions, Rock Engineering explains the geological principles and concepts required for successful geotechnical design and engineering of underground excavations. The book sets out the principles and techniques required in geology and rock engineering, including details on the evaluation of uncertainties in the geological and ground conditions, to support good practice in the design and engineering of underground projects. New to this edition: Updated throughout in line with new research results and new examples New aspects on swelling rock (rock geology) and a more detailed description of testing swelling rock New section on engineering geological field registrations with forecast on conditions in tunnel New sections on production capacity for drill and blast and for TBM".

This fully updated edition has added focus on rock engineering applications in design, planning and excavation. Special chapters have been added dealing with the practical use of the Euro Code in rock design, the design principles of some special underground projects and three case histories. The ambition is to better cover the complex engineering geological process in rock construction from ground investigation to execution. Rock Engineering, Second Edition: ¢¢outlines strategies for investigating different ground conditions ¢¢discusses new technology and methodology for detecting and analysing risks, and ensuring safety, accountability and sustainability is maintained ¢¢applies geological principles in rock engineering to detailed case study examples ¢¢explains the key principles of design of surface and underground structures ¢¢evaluates uncertainties in geological ground conditions Rock Engineering is a valuable reference tool for geotechnical engineers, geologists, consultants, contractors, and advanced students on rock engineering and engineering geology courses.

Jetties, piers and other marine structures constructed in exposed locations require careful assessment of their hydraulic loads. Increasingly trade economics are leading to larger ship sizes and existing and new port locations for these vessels require longer jetties in significantly deeper water. In these instances construction of protective breakwaters becomes substantially more expensive, so in some cases jetties or their approach trestles are being constructed in exposed locations without breakwater protection.
