The pioneering guide that breaks ground on the unique engineering properties of residual soils: Geotechnical Engineering in Residual Soils digs deep to help enrich the reader's knowledge on the subject of soils—in particular, residual soils—as they pertain to engineering. Appearing mostly in underdeveloped parts of the United States and tropical countries, these soils are playing an increasingly important role in building designs as construction encroaches into these areas. In recognition of this fact, this guide equips geotechnical engineers with essentials for learning the concepts and principles of residual soil behavior—and serves as a starting point to assist them in pursuing innovative engineering strategies for working effectively with residual soils. Geotechnical Engineering in Residual Soils: Introduces geotechnical engineers to those aspects of residual soil behavior that they ought to be aware of when undertaking projects in these soils * Highlights the mistaken interpretations of soil behavior that can result from the application to residual soils of traditional concepts derived from sedimentary soils * Includes numerous illustrations throughout, specifically addressing the unique properties of residual soils * Includes coverage of special topics, such as the role of negative pore pressure above the water table, the influence of weather conditions on soil behavior, the properties of volcanic soils, and compaction of residual soils * Is written by an author with more than thirty years of firsthand experience analyzing and designing for construction on residual soils. Thorough and insightful, Geotechnical Engineering in Residual Soils delivers a fresh overview on understanding the structural and mechanical properties of soils from an engineering perspective—and informs readers how to solidify design approaches to set their projects on a sure footing.

Nishantha Bandara, Manjriker Gunaratne ... 112 pages - Publisher: Momentum Press; (February, 2018) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 1606505408 - ISBN-13: 978-1606505403.

Familiarity with geotechnical aspects of pavement engineering is essential for the practicing pavement engineer. When designing pavements, accurate characterization of the existing subgrade condition becomes a crucial task. In the past, traditional geotechnical exploration and testing methods have been used to characterize existing subgrade conditions. However, with the introduction of the Mechanistic-Empirical (ME) pavement design, there is a need for improved and more appropriate methods of subgrade characterization, for prediction of future pavement conditions with better accuracy. Hence, this handbook will present a useful tool for practicing pavement engineers.

Swami Saran ... 312 pages - Publisher: CRC Press; 1st edition (December, 2017) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 0815374879 - ISBN-13: 978-0815374879 ...

The book offers a systematic analysis of footings (i.e. shallow foundations) in a realistic way, using constitutive relationships of the soil. The aim of the book is to deal with the theme holistically, involving the determination of the constitutive law of the soil, and then proportioning the footing occurring in different situations in actual practice. The book has eleven chapters. After giving an introduction and scope of the book in the first chapter, second and third chapters are respectively devoted to constitutive laws of soil and basic stress equations. In the third chapter analysis of strip footings subjected to central vertical load has been dealt. This analysis has been extended for eccentric –inclined load in the fifth chapter. Since problems of shallow foundations resting adjacent to a slope are of prime importance, this aspect has been dealt in sixth chapter. In the seventh chapter, analysis pertaining to square and rectangular footings have been presented. Effect of interference between adjacent footing is covered in chapter eight. Since ring footings are usually provided for tanks, silos, towers etc., ninth chapter is devoted to this. Added attraction of the book is its chapter ten in which footings located in seismic regions have been covered. Effect of embedment below the ground surface on the behavior of footings located both in non-seismic and seismic regions has been dealt in the chapter eleven. The book is intended for senior undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. students of civil engineering, research scholars, practicing engineers, teachers and academicians. The analyses are based on the latest information available. A number of illustrated examples have been included in the text. SI units have been used in the book.

The concept of effective stress and the effective stress equation is fundamental for establishing the theory of strength and the relationship of stress and strain in soil mechanics and poromechanics. However, up till now, the physical meaning of effective stress has not been explained clearly, and the theoretical basis of the effective stress equation has not been proposed. Researchers have not yet reached a common understanding of the feasibility of the concept of effective stress and effective stress equation for unsaturated soils.

Innovative Earthquake Soil Dynamics deals with soil dynamics in earthquake engineering and includes almost all aspects of soil behavior. Both generally accepted basic knowledge as well as advanced and innovative views are accommodated. Major topics are (i) seismic site amplification, (ii) liquefaction and (iii) earthquake-induced slope failure. Associated with the above, basic theories and knowledge on wave propagation/attenuation, soil properties, laboratory tests, numerical analyses, and model tests are addressed in the first part of the book. A great number of earthquake observations in surface soil deposits as well as case histories with new findings are addressed in the later chapters, together with associated laboratory test data. Most of the research results originate from Japan, which is rich in earthquake records and case histories, although mostly isolated from the outside world because of the language barrier. Another important feature characterizing this book is an energy perspective in addition to the force-equilibrium perspective, because it is the author’s strong belief that energy is a very relevant index in determining seismic failures, particularly of soils and soil structures. Innovative Earthquake Soil Dynamics is written for international readers, graduate students, researchers, and practicing engineers, interested in this field.

Building Research Establishment ... 68 pages - Publisher: IHS BRE Press; 3rd edition (November, 2010) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 1860817548 - ISBN-13: 978-1860817540 ...

This BRE Special Digest provides practical guidance on specifying concrete for use in natural ground and in brownfield locations. The procedures for ground assessment and concrete specification cover the fairly common occurrence of sulfates, sulfides and acids and also the more rarely occurring aggressive carbon dioxide found in some ground and surface waters, which affects concrete foundations and sub-structures. This edition has been revised to reflect thinking and changes to British Standards. It introduces the phenomenon of chemical attack of concrete in the ground, describes modes of chemical attack and discusses the mechanisms of the principal types, including sulfate and acid attack, and the action of aggressive carbon dioxide. It then gives guidance on assessing the chemical aggressiveness of the ground, and recommendations for specifying concrete for general cast-in-situ use in the ground. It also gives recommendations for specifying surface carbonated precast concrete for general use in the ground, and includes design guides for specification of specific precast concrete products, including pipeline systems, box culverts and segmental linings for tunnels and shafts. The guidance applies to both buildings and civil engineering construction.

Volcanic eruptions are generally viewed as agents of destruction, yet they provide the parent materials from which some of the most productive soils in the world are formed. The high productivity results from a combination of unique physical, chemical and mineralogical properties. The importance and uniqueness of volcanic ash soils are exemplified by the recent establishment of the Andisol soil order in Soil Taxonomy. This book provides the first comprehensive synthesis of all aspects of volcanic ash soils in a single volume. It contains in-depth coverage of important topics including terminology, morphology, genesis, classification, mineralogy, chemistry, physical properties, productivity and utilization. A wealth of data (37 tables, 81 figures, and Appendix) mainly from the Tohoku University Andisol Data Base is used to illustrate major concepts. Twelve color plates provide a valuable visual-aid and complement the text description of the world-wide distribution for volcanic ash soils. This volume will serve as a valuable reference for soil scientists, plant scientists, ecologists and geochemists interested in biogeochemical processes occurring in soils derived form volcanic ejecta.

From bridges and tunnels to nuclear waste repositories, structures require that soils maintain their design engineering properties if the structures are to reach their projected life spans. The same is true for earth dams, levees, buffers, barriers for landfills, and other structures that use soils as engineered materials. Yet soil, a natural resource, continues to change as a result of natural and anthropogenic stresses. As the discipline of soil properties and behaviours matures, new tools and techniques are making it possible to study these properties and behaviours in more depth. What Happens to Soil Under Weathering, Aging, and Chemical Stress?: Environmental Soil Properties and Behaviour examines changes in soil properties and behaviour caused by short- and long-term stresses from anthropogenic activities and environmental forces. Introducing new concepts of soil behaviour, soil maturation, and soil functionality, it integrates soil physics, soil chemistry, and soil mechanics as vital factors in soil engineering. The book focuses on environmental soil behaviour, with particular attention to two main inter-related groups of soil–environment issues. The first is the use of soil as an environmental tool for management and containment of toxic and hazardous waste materials. The second is the impact of ageing and weathering processes and soil contamination on the properties and behaviour of soils, especially those used in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering projects. A Transdisciplinary Look at Soil-Changing Processes: To determine short- and long-term soil quality and soil functionality, the authors emphasize the need to be aware of the nature of the stressors involved as well as the kinds of soil-changing processes that are evoked. This book takes a first step toward a much-needed transdisciplinary effort to develop a broader and deeper understanding of what happens to soil and how we can determine and quantify the effect of biogeochemical processes. It offers a timely resource for the study of soil properties and behaviours, effects of environmental changes, and remediation of contaminated soil.
