Addresses the Question Frequently Proposed to the Designer by Architects: "Can We Do This? Offering guidance on how to use code-based procedures while at the same time providing an understanding of why provisions are necessary, Tall Building Design: Steel, Concrete, and Composite Systems methodically explores the structural behavior of steel, concrete, and composite members and systems. This text establishes the notion that design is a creative process, and not just an execution of framing proposals. It cultivates imaginative approaches by presenting examples specifically related to essential building codes and standards. Tying together precision and accuracy―it also bridges the gap between two design approaches―one based on initiative skill and the other based on computer skill. The book explains loads and load combinations typically used in building design, explores methods for determining design wind loads using the provisions of ASCE 7-10, and examines wind tunnel procedures. It defines conceptual seismic design, as the avoidance or minimization of problems created by the effects of seismic excitation. It introduces the concept of performance-based design (PBD). It also addresses serviceability considerations, prediction of tall building motions, damping devices, seismic isolation, blast-resistant design, and progressive collapse. The final chapters explain gravity and lateral systems for steel, concrete, and composite buildings. The Book Also Considers: Preliminary analysis and design techniques +The structural rehabilitation of seismically vulnerable steel and concrete buildings + Design differences between code-sponsored approaches +The concept of ductility trade-off for strength. Tall Building Design: Steel, Concrete, and Composite Systems is a structural design guide and reference for practicing engineers and educators, as well as recent graduates entering the structural engineering profession. This text examines all major concrete, steel, and composite building systems, and uses the most up-to-date building codes.

Theories of surface waves develop since the end of XIX century and many fundamental problems like existence, phase and group velocities, attenuation (quality factor), mode conversion, etc. have been, in part successfully, solved within the framework of such simple models as ideal fluids or linear elasticity. However, a sufficiently complete presentation of this subject, particularly for solids, is still missing in the literature. The sole exception is the book of I. A. Viktorov which contains an extensive discussion of fundamental properties of surface waves in homogeneous and stratified linear elastic solids with particular emphasis on contributions of Russian scientists. Unfortunately, the book has never been translated to English and its Russian version is also hardly available. Practical applications of surface waves develop intensively since a much shorter period of time than theories even though the motivation of discoverers of surface waves such as Lord Rayleigh stems from their appearance in geophysics and seismology. Nowadays the growing interest in practical applications of surface waves stem from the following two main factors: surface waves are ideal for developing relatively cheap and convenient methods of nondestructive testing of various systems spanning from nanomaterials. The mathematical description of the properties of a shell is much more elaborate than those of beam and plate structures. Therefore many engineers and architects are unacquainted with aspects of shell behaviour and design, and are not familiar with sufficiently reliable shell theories for the different shell types as derived in the middle of the 20th century. Rather than contributing to theory development, this university textbook focuses on architectural and civil engineering schools. Of course, practising professionals will profit from it as well.

The book deals with thin elastic shells, in particular with cylindrical, conical and spherical types, and with elliptic and hyperbolic paraboloids. The focus is on roofs, chimneys, pressure vessels and storage tanks. Special attention is paid to edge bending disturbance zones, which is indispensable knowledge in FE meshing. A substantial part of the book results from research efforts in the mid 20th century at Delft University of Technology. As such, it is a valuable addition to the body of shell research literature of continuing importance. This work can be used for university courses. It also shows professionals how to perform manual calculations of the main force flow in shell structures, and provides guidance for structural engineers estimating stresses and deformations.

Traditionally, structural design has been taught using classical methods of calculation by hand. However, computers are increasingly being used to teach the subject and one consequence of this move has been a perception that students are losing a basic understanding of structural design. This book addresses that problem by encouraging basic understanding of the subject whilst using computers to do the design work. Quick test techniques are given for evaluating the answers generated by the computer.

The goal of the Compaction Grouting Consensus Guide is to promote good practice in compaction grouting. Compaction grouting is a ground improvement technique that increases the density, strength and stiffness of the ground through slow, controlled injections of low-mobility grout that compacts the soil as the grout mass expands. Compaction grouting can be applied equally well above or below the water table. The technology can be applied to a wide range of soils, in most cases being used to improve the engineering properties of poorly compacted fills and loose native soils. This guide covers both the practical and engineering aspects of compaction grouting and is essential reading for anyone interested in specifying, designing, and/or undertaking compaction grouting.

The Sustainability Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineer s Structural Engineering Institute (ASCE SEI) prepared these guidelines to advance the understanding of sustainability in the structural community and to incorporate concepts of sustainability into structural engineering standards and practices. This book will educate and guide structural engineers as they meet the challenge to design and construct a sustainable built environment. The guidelines are organized into five sections: Sustainable Design and Construction, Sustainable Strategies, Building Materials, Infrastructure, and Case Studies. Although many of the subjects presented are related, each section and the related subsections have been written to stand alone, allowing this report to be used as a practical reference. This report was written for structural engineers, but related disciplines will also benefit from the contents. The book includes an important section on infrastructure because, many of the concepts and ideas presented in this guide relate to infrastructure, as well as design and construction.

"The plastic theory of structures," the author writes, "is an essential complement to elastic theory. The readily applied forms of either theory depend on idealized mathematical models both of the material properties and of the fabricated nature of the structure. By applying each theory in turn to the same structure, a much better overall picture is obtained of the stability, rigidity, and strength than is possible by applying either theory on its own."

Plastic theory is used as the basis of design for the majority of single-story rigid frames and is being increasingly applied to multistory frames. An important feature of the theory is the extent to which intuitive ideas of structural behavior may be used to solve problems. In this text, Professor Horne employs this method to explain the principles involved. He backs up the intuitive approach by formal statements and proofs of theorems and explains the methods of plastic analysis. Methods which are of value in design applications and are suited primarily to hand calculations are emphasized, but methods suitable for computer application are also included. Relevant problems are given at the end of each chapter with answers at the end of the book.

Proceedings of the 10th International Conference of Chinese Transportation Professionals (ICCTP 2010), held in Beijing, China, August 4 8, 2010. ICCTP 2010 is jointly hosted by NACOTA and Beijing University of Technology (BJUT) with the sponsorships of the Transportation and Development Institute (T&DI) of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and Transportation Research Board (TRB) Committee on Transportation in Developing Countries (ABE90). In the last two decades, many large cities in China have experienced rapid urban sprawl, which has been resulted in extensive expansion and motorization of the cities. The threat of increasingly unsustainable urban transportation systems has become a focus of attention as the awareness of the unhealthy interaction between a surging demand for transportation services and the environmental impact of such increases. The goal of this conference, the theme of which is Integrated Transportation Systems: Green, Intelligent, Reliable , is to meet the needs of urban transportation systems in a capacity that is environmentally sound, socially equitable, and economically viable. Some of the topics addressed in this proceedings include: comprehensive transportation planning, traffic safety theory and technology, transportation management, operation technology and systems, and public transportation technology and systems. This proceedings will be valuable to anyone involved in the transportation engineering industry.

"Soil mechanics is a pioneer science which has grown rapidly during the last two decades. Its introduction into this country - under this name, at least - is generally accredited to Dr. Karl Terzaghi and is considered to have occurred in 1925. With each year since that date soil mechanics has become more widely known, the number of soil mechanics laboratories has increased, more colleges have offered courses in this new subject, and practical applications of this science have become more numerous. The amount of existing soil mechanics literature has increased rapidly but textbooks and handboks have been slow to appear, probably because of the extensive scope of the subject. Books of a number of types on this subject are needed, and it is of considerable importance to distinguish between the various types, which include the handbook for the practicing engineer, the manual for the laboratory technician, the textbooks for college courses of undergraduate level and graduate level, and the advanced textbook for the specialist. It is probable that no book can serve more than one or two of these fields to best advantage. This book is written as a textbook for use in graduate courses, but it is presented in such form that by the omission of certain portions it can be used in undergraduate courses. Practicing engineers and specialists in soil engineering may find the book of interest and value but, primarily, it is written for the student. The basic aim of the book is the presentation of fundamentals rather than the furnishing of final answers to practical problems; nevertheless, the book aims to develop the reader's appreciation for the practical significance of the various subjects considered. I wish to acknowledge and to express appreciation for the privilege of including in this book material that is the work of three of my predecessors on the Soil Mechanics staff of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology... Because of their structural simplicity, bridges tend to be particularly vulnerable to damage and even collapse when subjected to earthquakes or other forms of seismic activity. Recent earthquakes, such as the ones in Kobe, Japan, and Oakland, California, have led to a heightened awareness of seismic risk and have revolutionized bridge design and retrofit philosophies. In Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges, three of the world's top authorities on the subject have collaborated to produce the most exhaustive reference on seismic bridge design currently available. Following a detailed examination of the seismic effects of actual earthquakes on local area bridges, the authors demonstrate design strategies that will make these and similar structures optimally resistant to the damaging effects of future seismic disturbances.

Relying heavily on worldwide research associated with recent quakes, Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges begins with an in-depth treatment of seismic design philosophy as it applies to bridges. The authors then describe the various geotechnical considerations specific to bridge design, such as soil-structure interaction and traveling wave effects. Subsequent chapters cover conceptual and actual design of various bridge superstructures, and modeling and analysis of these structures. As the basis for their design strategies, the authors' focus is on the widely accepted capacity design approach, in which particularly vulnerable locations of potentially inelastic flexural deformation are identified and strengthened to accommodate a greater degree of stress. The text illustrates how accurate application of the capacity design philosophy to the design of new bridges results in structures that can be expected to survive most earthquakes with only minor, repairable damage. Because the majority of today's bridges were built before the capacity design approach was understood, the authors also devote several chapters to the seismic assessment of existing bridges, with the aim of designing and implementing retrofit measures to protect them against the damaging effects of future earthquakes. These retrofitting techniques, though not considered appropriate in the design of new bridges, are given considerable emphasis, since they currently offer the best solution for the preservation of these vital and often historically valued thoroughfares.

Practical and applications-oriented, Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges is enhanced with over 300 photos and line drawings to illustrate key concepts and detailed design procedures. As the only text currently available on the vital topic of seismic bridge design, it provides an indispensable reference for civil, structural, and geotechnical engineers, as well as students in related engineering courses. A state-of-the-art text on earthquake-proof design and retrofit of bridges: Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges fills the urgent need for a comprehensive and up-to-date text on seismic-ally resistant bridge design. The authors, all recognized leaders in the field, systematically cover all aspects of bridge design related to seismic resistance for both new and existing bridges.  A complete overview of current design philosophy for bridges, with related seismic and geotechnical considerations * Coverage of conceptual design constraints and their relationship to current design alternatives * Modeling and analysis of bridge structures * An exhaustive look at common building materials and their response to seismic activity * A hands-on approach to the capacity design process * Use of isolation and dissipation devices in bridge design * Important coverage of seismic assessment and retrofit design of existing bridges.
