BASIC Hydraulics aims to help students both to become proficient in the BASIC programming language by actually using the language in an important field of engineering and to use computing as a means of mastering the subject of hydraulics. The book begins with a summary of the technique of computing in BASIC together with comments and listing of the main commands and statements. Subsequent chapters introduce the fundamental concepts and appropriate governing equations. Topics covered include principles of fluid mechanics; flow in pipes, pipe networks and open channels; hydraulic machinery; and seepage and groundwater flow. Each chapter provides a series of worked examples consisting primarily of an introduction in which the general topic or specific problem to be considered is presented. A program capable of solving the problem is then given, together with examples of the output, sometimes for several different sets of conditions. Finally, in a section headed Program Notes the way the program is constructed and operates is explained, and the engineering lessons to be learned from the program output are indicated. Each chapter also concludes with a set of problems for the student to attempt. This book is mainly intended for the first- and second-year undergraduate student of civil engineering who will be concerned with the application of fundamental fluid mechanics theory to civil engineering problems.

From nature, we observe swarming behavior in the form of ant colonies, bird flocking, animal herding, honey bees, swarming of bacteria, and many more.  It is only in recent years that researchers have taken notice of such natural swarming systems as culmination of some form of innate collective intelligence, albeit swarm intelligence (SI) - a metaphor that inspires a myriad of computational problem-solving techniques.  In computational intelligence, swarm-like algorithms have been successfully applied to solve many real-world problems in engineering and sciences. This handbook volume serves as a useful foundational as well as consolidatory state-of-art collection of articles in the field from various researchers around the globe.  It has a rich collection of contributions pertaining to the theoretical and empirical study of single and multi-objective variants of swarm intelligence based algorithms like particle swarm optimization (PSO), ant colony optimization (ACO), bacterial foraging optimization algorithm (BFOA), honey bee social foraging algorithms, and harmony search (HS).  With chapters describing various applications of SI techniques in real-world engineering problems, this handbook can be a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners, giving an in-depth flavor of what SI is capable of achieving.

Swarm Intelligence: Principles, Advances, and Applications delivers in-depth coverage of bat, artificial fish swarm, firefly, cuckoo search, flower pollination, artificial bee colony, wolf search, and gray wolf optimization algorithms. The book begins with a brief introduction to mathematical optimization, addressing basic concepts related to swarm intelligence, such as randomness, random walks, and chaos theory. The text then: * Describes the various swarm intelligence optimization methods, standardizing the variants, hybridizations, and algorithms whenever possible * Discusses variants that focus more on binary, discrete, constrained, adaptive, and chaotic versions of the swarm optimizers * Depicts real-world applications of the individual optimizers, emphasizing variable selection and fitness function design * Details the similarities, differences, weaknesses, and strengths of each swarm optimization method * Draws parallels between the operators and searching manners of the different algorithms. Swarm Intelligence: Principles, Advances, and Applications presents a comprehensive treatment of modern swarm intelligence optimization methods, complete with illustrative examples and an extendable MATLAB® package for feature selection in wrapper mode applied on different data sets with benchmarking using different evaluation criteria. The book provides beginners with a solid foundation of swarm intelligence fundamentals, and offers experts valuable insight into new directions and hybridizations.

Thomas Whitaker ... The Design of Piled Foundations, Second Edition focuses on the theories which have been advanced to predict the loads which piles will carry, both singly and when used in groups to form a piled foundation. Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins with an explanation of the utilization of piles. Subsequent chapters discuss the types of piles and their construction; pile driving by vibration; the calculation of the ultimate bearing capacity of a pile from soil properties; the settlement of single piles and the choice of a factor of safety; and piles in soft soils. Other chapters describe pile testing; piles in groups with vertical loading; horizontal forces on piles and pile group; and the durability of piles.

Foundation Design discusses fundamental concepts in the design of foundations. As with the author's previous work, the AJ Handbook of Building Structure, the emphasis is on practical matters and, while every architect may not aspire to more complicated designs, with the aid of this book he will be able to talk with more authority to his engineer.

The book begins with an introduction to the properties rocks and soils, including sands and gravels, clays, and silts and peat. This is followed by discussions of the site investigation process, soil mechanics, and the principles of foundation design. Separate chapters cover foundation types (spread foundations and piles); foundation hazards and construction problems; and underpinning. Examples of foundation design are presented, such as simple bases, a column on the edge of a building, and examples of piling. The final two chapters discuss specifications for mass bases, reinforced pads, and trench foundations and pile caps; information to be given when inviting piling tenders; and the supervision of site works.
