Forensic engineers often specialize in a particular area such as structures, fires, or accident reconstruction. However, the nature of the work often requires broad knowledge in the interrelated areas of physics, chemistry, biomechanics, and engineering. Covering cases as varied as assessment of workplace accidents to the investigation of Halliburton in the BP oil spill, Forensic Engineering Fundamentals is a comprehensive introduction to the many diverse facets of the field that forensic engineers must be familiar with in their practice.

Topics include: The role of the forensic engineer * Structures, structural distress, and the importance of standards and codes * The failure of appliances―the cause of many water- or fire-related losses * Slips, trips, and falls of pedestrians and the accessibility of walking surfaces * Industrial incidents involving loss of equipment, injury and loss of life, as well as OSHA and MSHA regulations * Standard accident reconstruction involving vehicles * Electrical incidents and lightning and the effect of electrical energy on the human body * Analysis of fires with an emphasis on thermodynamics, testing, and simulation * Carbon monoxide incidents and common fire suppression and warning systems, as well as the various NFPA codes * Probability and uncertainty, with some basic calculations available to the forensic engineer * Applicable standards and protocols that have developed over the years to protect life and property * Offering readers real-world experience drawn from the authors’ 25 years of experience, this volume assists newcomers to the field in understanding the engineering basics underlying the cases they will encounter in their practice. It also serves as a reliable reference for those confronted with issues outside their area of expertise.

Guidelines for Forensic Engineering Practice, Second Edition, describes the technical, ethical, business, and legal components of the professional practice in forensic civil engineering in the United States. The practice of forensic engineering includes the investigation of buildings, bridges, and other constructed facilities that fail or do not perform as intended. It also involves rendering opinions as to the causes of failure or underperformance and testifying in judicial proceedings. Topics include: competencies and qualifications of forensic engineers; standard of care; investigations and reports; ethics; the legal forum; and the business of forensic engineering. The ASCE Code of Ethics is included in an appendix. Civil engineers of all disciplines, including structural and geotechnical engineers, will consult this book for guidance on the effective and ethical practice of forensic civil engineering. This book serves as a primer for engineers new to forensic practice and as a useful reference for seasoned practitioners.

With the growing concern over adverse environmental impacts of dams on ecosystems and fish populations, the number of dam removals is rapidly increasing. Dams alter ecology, block fish passage, increase downstream scour, and displace residents, and dam removal is now a common solution. Concerns have arisen regarding the behavior of stored sediment and overall stream geomorphology when the dam is removed. Because large amounts of sediment have collected behind many dams, the issue of what will happen to the impounded sediment if the dam is removed is of critical importance. This monograph provides guidance and documentation of numerical and physical modeling and field experience regarding dam removal and its modeling. It will be a valuable aid to watershed and river agencies and their consultants, as well as to researchers.

Blast Protection of Buildings provides minimum requirements for planning, design, construction, and assessment of new and existing buildings subject to the effects of accidental or malicious explosions. The Standard includes principles for establishing appropriate threat parameters, levels of protection, loadings, analysis methodologies, materials, detailing, and test procedures. It provides a comprehensive presentation of current practice in the analysis and design of structures for blast resistance. Commentaries on the requirements are also included. The Standard supplements existing building codes, standards, and laws, but is not intended to replace them.

Earthquakes and Engineers: An International History is the first comprehensive treatment of the engineering techniques devised around the world to address seismic problems. Beginning in ancient times, threading through the Renaissance, and continuing into the latter half of the 20th century, Reitherman traces the evolution of humankind's understanding of the cause and characteristics of earthquakes and the development of methods to design structures that resist seismic shocks. This book examines the responses not only of structural engineers, but also of geotechnical engineers, architects, and planners. International efforts in such countries as Japan, China, India, Chile, Turkey, Italy, and the United States are placed in the broader social, technological, and economic contexts of their eras. This highly readable book is an essential reference for civil engineers who work on projects in seismic regions. For researchers in the field of the history of science and technology, the book presents original source material and an extensive list of references. Written in a straightforward style that is accessible to nonengineers, it will also be valuable to architects, planners, officials, and social scientists.

With contributions from leading experts in a high-profile field, this collection introduces a range of problems in offshore technology, as well as detailing ways of modeling the dynamics of machines commonly used in this environmentally sensitive industry. This book describes new methods developed for modelling dynamics of machines commonly used in the offshore industry. These methods are based both on the rigid finite element method, used for the description of link deformations, and on homogeneous transformations and joint coordinates, which is applied to the modelling of multibody system dynamics. In this monograph, the bases of the rigid finite element method  and homogeneous transformations are introduced. Selected models for modelling dynamics of offshore devices are then verified both by using commercial software, based on the finite element method, as well as by using additional methods. Examples of mathematical models of offshore machines, such as a gantry crane for Blowout-Preventer (BOP) valve block transportation, a pedestal crane with shock absorber, and pipe laying machinery are presented. Selected problems of control in offshore machinery as well as dynamic optimization in device control are also discussed. Additionally, numerical simulations of pipe-laying operations taking active reel drive into account are shown.
