The papers in this Geotechnical Special Publication were presented at the GeoHunan International Conference: Challenges and Recent Advances in Pavement Technologies and Transportation Geotechnics, which took place in Changsha, Hunan, China from August 3 to 6, 2009. These peer-reviewed papers are from the session of Soils and Rock Instrumentation, Behavior and Modeling. Hunan, one of the largest commercial provinces in China, is rapidly developing into a modern epicenter of international finance and trade. Recent construction in many parts of China has provided geotechnical engineers with great opportunities for creating cutting-edge solutions to problems involving foundations, ground improvement, slopes, excavations, and tunnels. This proceedings will be valuable to engineers and professionals involved in many aspects of geotechnical engineering.

The mathematical description of the properties of a shell is much more elaborate than those of beam and plate structures. Therefore many engineers and architects are unacquainted with aspects of shell behaviour and design, and are not familiar with sufficiently reliable shell theories for the different shell types as derived in the middle of the 20th century. Rather than contributing to theory development, this university textbook focuses on architectural and civil engineering schools. Of course, practising professionals will profit from it as well.

The book deals with thin elastic shells, in particular with cylindrical, conical and spherical types, and with elliptic and hyperbolic paraboloids. The focus is on roofs, chimneys, pressure vessels and storage tanks. Special attention is paid to edge bending disturbance zones, which is indispensable knowledge in FE meshing. A substantial part of the book results from research efforts in the mid 20th century at Delft University of Technology. As such, it is a valuable addition to the body of shell research literature of continuing importance. This work can be used for university courses. It also shows professionals how to perform manual calculations of the main force flow in shell structures, and provides guidance for structural engineers estimating stresses and deformations.

Traditionally, structural design has been taught using classical methods of calculation by hand. However, computers are increasingly being used to teach the subject and one consequence of this move has been a perception that students are losing a basic understanding of structural design. This book addresses that problem by encouraging basic understanding of the subject whilst using computers to do the design work. Quick test techniques are given for evaluating the answers generated by the computer.

This book is aimed at senior undergraduates, graduates and engineers. It fills the gap between the numerous textbooks on traditional Applied Mechanics and postgraduate books on Finite Element Methods. Fills the gap between the applied mechanics and finite element methods * Discusses basic structural concepts and energy theorems, the discrete system, in-plane quadrilateral elements, field problems and mathematical modelling, among other topics * Aimed at senior undergraduates, graduates and engineers.

Structural Timber Design is a comprehensive textbook that provides students of building and civil engineering courses with a wealth of information and in-depth guidance on design methods to the recently revised BS 5268 : Part 2 and the proposed Eurocode 5. It is also an invaluable reference source and design aid for practising engineers and architects. The text provides a step-by-step approach to the design of all the most commonly used timber elements and connections (illustrated by detailed work examples), and encourages the use of computers to carry out design calculations. I t covers the characteristics of timber; a review of BS 5268: Part 2 and its requirements; the design of beams and columns of solid, glued laminated and composite sections and mechanical and glued timber connections. The book also reviews the proposed Eurocode 5 and its limit states requirements, including the design of flexural and axially loaded members and connections.

Preparation of Construction Specifications for Civil Projects provides a ready, convenient resource for the recommended principles and approaches used for specification production in civil-engineered projects. Poorly written and ambiguous specifications can result in construction claims, increased cost, and litigation. This guide includes step-by-step instructions, checklists, and sample documents for various specifications. Topics include: purpose, goals, philosophy, and developmental planning for specifications; formatting, writing, and review of specifications; and bidding and contract award documents. This guide is an update to Preparing Specifications for Design-Bid Build Projects and will be of interest to engineers, contractors, and construction professionals.

This second edition of Concrete Pavement Design, Construction, and Performance provides a solid foundation for pavement engineers seeking relevant and applicable design and construction instruction. It relies on general principles instead of specific ones, and incorporates illustrative case studies and prime design examples to highlight the material. It presents a thorough understanding of materials selection, mixture proportioning, design and detailing, drainage, construction techniques, and pavement performance. It also offers insight into the theoretical framework underlying commonly used design procedures as well as the limits of the applicability of the procedures. All chapters have been updated to reflect recent developments, including some alternative and emerging design technologies that improve sustainability.

What’s New in the Second Edition: The second edition of this book contains a new chapter on sustainability, and coverage of mechanistic-empirical design and pervious concrete pavements. RCC pavements are now given a new chapter. The text also expands the industrial pavement design chapter.

Outlines alternatives for concrete pavement solutions + Identifies desired performance and behavior parameters + Establishes appropriate materials and desired concrete proportions + Presents steps for translating the design into a durable facility.

The book highlights significant innovations such as one is two-lift concrete pavements, precast concrete pavement systems, RCC pavement, interlocking concrete pavers, thin concrete pavement design, and pervious concrete. This text also addresses pavement management, maintenance, rehabilitation, and overlays.
