The presence of thick deposits of soft clay combined with the effects of ground subsidence cause problems for engineering constructions for lowland areas such as the Central Plain (Chao Phraya) of Thailand. The ground subsidence is caused by the excessive extraction of ground water. To mitigate such natural geological hazards, different soil/ground improvement methods have been studied, namely: mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) embankments, granular or sand compaction piles, vertical drains, and the lime/cement deep mixing method. In view of their proven performance, durability, constructibility, short time schedule, and low costs, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) or earth reinforcement techniques seem to be very suitable and favorable above-ground soil improvement methods of embankment fills on subsiding ground. This method can be most appropriately combined with the various belowground improvement techniques such as vertical drains, sand compaction piles, and the lime/cement deep mixing method. Thus, the combined above-ground soil improvement with below-ground subsoil improvement schemes can be a viable alternative to the existing method of supporting earth embankments and landfills with precast concrete piles, which may prove detrimental and more expensive in a subsiding environment.

This book presents the application of a comparatively simple nonparametric regression algorithm, known as the multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) surrogate model, which can be used to approximate the relationship between the inputs and outputs, and express that relationship mathematically. The book first describes the MARS algorithm, then highlights a number of geotechnical applications with multivariate big data sets to explore the approach’s generalization capabilities and accuracy. As such, it offers a valuable resource for all geotechnical researchers, engineers, and general readers interested in big data analysis.

I. M. Idriss, R. W. Boulanger ... 262 pages - Publisher: Earthquake Engineering Research Institute; (September, 2008) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 193288436X - ISBN-13: 978-1932884364.

This monograph updates a subject area covered in the 1982 classic text used around the world, Ground Motions and Soil Liquefaction During Earthquakes, by H. Bolton Seed and I.M. Idriss. The new publication will fill a need for a thorough synthesis in one accessible resource for students, practicing engineers, and other professionals of progress in the study of liquefaction since 1982. The following areas are covered: Fundamentals of liquefaction behavior: a framework for a common understanding of the development and limitations of various engineering analytical procedures. Liquefaction triggering analysis: methods for evaluating the potential for liquefaction triggering. Consequences and mitigation of liquefaction: examples of lateral spreading and post-liquefaction settlement analyses, the use of factors of safety in engineering practice, mitigation strategies, and methods for ground improvement. Cyclic softening of saturated clays: engineering procedures for evaluating the potential performance of cohesive fine-grained soils. Three of the 136 figures are in color, illustrating comparisons of liquefaction analysis procedures.

This volume brings together contributions from world renowned researchers and practitioners in the field of geotechnical engineering. The chapters of this book are based on the keynote and invited lectures delivered at the 7th International Conference on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics. The book presents advances in the field of soil dynamics and geotechnical earthquake engineering. A strong emphasis is placed on proving connections between academic research and field practice, with many examples, case studies, best practices, and discussions on performance-based design. This volume will be of interest to research scholars, academicians and industry professionals alike.

Hassan Al Nageim ... 454 pages - Publisher: CRC Press; 4th edition (November, 2016) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 1482263556 - ISBN-13: 978-1482263558.

The fourth edition of this popular steel structures book contains references to both Eurocodes and British Standards. All the material has been updated where necessary, and new and revised worked examples are included. Sections on the meaning, the purpose and limits of structural design, sustainable steel building and energy saving have been updated. The initial chapters cover the essentials of structural engineering and structural steel design. The remainder of the book is dedicated to a detail examination of the analysis and design of selected types of structures, presenting complex designs in an understandable and user-friendly way. These structures include a range of single and multi-storey buildings, floor systems and wide-span buildings. Each design example is illustrated with applications based on current Eurocodes or British Standard design data, thus assisting the reader to share in the environment of the design process that normally takes place in practical offices and develop real design skills. Two new chapters on the design of cased steel columns and plate girders with and without rigid end posts to EC4 & EC3 are included too. References have been fully updated and include useful website addresses. Emphasis is placed on practical design with a view to helping undergraduate students and newly qualified engineers bridge the gap between academic study and work in the design office. Practising engineers who need a refresher course on up-to-dates methods of design and analysis to EC3 and EC4 will also find the book useful, and numerous worked examples are included.
