This book teaches the principles of soil mechanics to undergraduates, along with other properties of engineering materials, to which the students are exposed simultaneously. Using the critical state method of soil mechanics to study the mechanical behavior of soils requires the student to consider density alongside effective stresses, permitting the unification of deformation and strength characteristics. This unification aides the understanding of soil mechanics. This book explores a one-dimensional theme for the presentation of many of the key concepts of soil mechanics - density, stress, stiffness, strength, and fluid flow - and includes a chapter on the analysis of one-dimensional consolidation, which fits nicely with the theme of the book. It also presents some theoretical analyses of soil-structure interaction, which can be analyzed using essentially one-dimensional governing equations. Examples are given at the end of most chapters, and suggestions for laboratory exercises or demonstrations are given.

This book presents a series of integrated computer programs in Fortran-90 for the dynamic analysis of structures, using the finite element method. Two dimensional continuum structures such as walls are covered along with skeletal structures such as rigid jointed frames and plane grids. Response to general dynamic loading of single degree freedom systems is calculated, and the author also examines multi degree of freedom systems (including earthquake analysis). Each chapter covers a different aspect of analytic theory and the corresponding program segments. It will be an essential tool for practising structural and civil engineers, whilst also being of interest to academics and postgraduate students.

Fundamentals of Structural Analysis second edition, introduces engineering and architectural students to the basic techniques for analyzing the most common structural elements, including beams, trusses, frames, cables, and arches. The text covers the classical methods of analysis for determinate and indeterminate structures, and provides an introduction to the matrix formulation on which computer analysis is based. This edition features an expanded treatment of snow, earthquake, and wind loads that are part of the updated ANSI/ASCE 7 standards. We've also added Historical Notes to this addition that provide valuable insights to the development of today's techniques and practices.

Elasticity: Theory, Applications and Numerics 2e provides a concise and organized presentation and development of the theory of elasticity, moving from solution methodologies, formulations and strategies into applications of contemporary interest, including fracture mechanics, anisotropic/composite materials, micromechanics and computational methods. Developed as a text for a one- or two-semester graduate elasticity course, this new edition is the only elasticity text to provide coverage in the new area of non-homogenous, or graded, material behavior. Extensive end-of-chapter exercises throughout the book are fully incorporated with the use of MATLAB software. Key Features: * Provides a thorough yet concise introduction to general elastic theory and behavior * Demonstrates numerous applications in areas of contemporary interest including fracture mechanics, anisotropic/composite and graded materials, micromechanics, and computational methods * The only current elasticity text to incorporate MATLAB into its extensive end-of-chapter exercises * The book's organization makes it well-suited for a one or two semester course in elastictiy. Features New to the Second Edition: * First elasticity text to offer a chapter on non-homogenous, or graded, material behavior * New appendix on review of undergraduate mechanics of materials theory to make the text more self-contained * 355 end of chapter exercises – 30% NEW to this edition.

Advanced Foundation Engineering is the second volume in the series on geotechnical engineering, closely following A Textbook of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering written to meet the requirements of undergraduate students. This volume covers various aspects of foundation engineering, bringing together all the relevant advanced theories coherently. As foundations have to be designed to simulate field conditions, it is imperative that the consulting engineer must be conversant with all the theories that are available as also the available approaches. This volume strives to meet most of these requirements It also presents in detail author s own research work on laterally loaded pile foundations to solve many of the problems confronted in this field. The approach is direct and simple as compared to the complicated methods proposed by others. This is an excellent text reference for the postgraduate students, practising engineers, consultants, researchers and professionals, in addition to serving as a valuable resource for the candidates appearing in Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineers (GATE), UPSC and other national selection entrance tests/examinations.

The modelling tools for soils and rocks require more and more specific parameters not always available from the standard or usual survey campaigns, this generally for reasons of delay or costs. The use of correlations to solve the gap between available parameters and the required ones is a common practice. Many of them exist but are spread throughout numerous papers or books. The aim of this formulary is to provide a large synthesis of the existing correlations accumulated by the authors during more than 40 years academic and consulting careers.
