This book provides an extensive coverage of the design of reinforced concrete structures in accordance with the current Indian code of practice (IS 456: 2000). As some of the Indian code provisions are outdated, the American code provisions are provided, wherever necessary. In addition, an attempt is made to integrate the provisions of IS 456 with earthquake code (IS 13920), as more than 60% of India falls under moderate or severe earthquake zones. The text is based on the limit state approach to design and covers areas such as the properties of concrete, design of various structural elements such as compression and tension members, beams & slabs, and design for flexure, shear torsion, uni-axial and biaxial bending and interaction of these forces. Each chapter features solved examples, review questions, and practice problems as well as ample illustrations that supplement the text. An exhaustive list of references as well as appendices on strut-and-tie-method, properties of soils, and practical tips add value to the rich contents of book.

Mechanical Vibrations, 5/e is ideal for undergraduate courses in Vibration Engineering: Retaining the style of its previous editions, this text presents the theory, computational aspects, and applications of vibrations in as simple a manner as possible. With an emphasis on computer techniques of analysis, it gives expanded explanations of the fundamentals, focusing on physical significance and interpretation that build upon students' previous experience. Each self-contained topic fully explains all concepts and presents the derivations with complete details. Numerous examples and problems illustrate principles and concepts.

The text contains a number of examples of spreadsheet layouts which have been developed for solving specific design problems using a variety of techniques. Examples are drawn from different areas of design using a range of materials and a number of Codes of Practice. Most design routines can be simplified by use of a spreadsheet and the aim of this text has been to illustrate the techniques that are available so that the methods can then be applied to other problems. Structural Engineering design consists of a mixture of solving equations, ensuring that limiting conditions are obeyed, selecting values from tables or graphs and a study of the effects of the use of trial values. All these processes can be handled by the use of a suitable spreadsheet function or formula. The book shows that many of the standard charts used by Engineers can be replaced by a spreadsheet. For example all the charts used for the design of reinforced concrete columns, short or slender and subjected to either uniaxial or biaxial bending, can be replaced by a single spreadsheet. Charts for beam and slab design are treated similarly and also replaced by spreadsheets. Many of the examples in the text use the equations and restrictions quoted in the relevant British Codes. The time taken to develop a spreadsheet layout suitable for a particular problem will obviously depend on the complexity of the problem but most of the layouts provided throughout the text were developed in a few hours.

Presently, general-purpose optimization techniques such as Simulated Annealing, and Genetic Algorithms, have become standard optimization techniques. Concerted research efforts have been made recently in order to invent novel optimization techniques for solving real life problems, which have the attributes of memory update and population-based search solutions. The book describes a variety of these novel optimization techniques which in most cases outperform the standard optimization techniques in many application areas. New Optimization Techniques in Engineering reports applications and results of the novel optimization techniques considering a multitude of practical problems in the different engineering disciplines ? presenting both the background of the subject area and the techniques for solving the problems.

This volume and its companion volume includes the edited versions of the principal lectures and selected papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Optimization and Decision Support Systems in Civil Engineering. The Institute was held in the Department of Civil Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh from June 25th to July 6th 1989 and was attended by eighty participants from Universities and Research Institutes around the world. A number of practising civil and structural engineers also attended. The lectures and papers have been divided into two volumes to reflect the dual themes of the Institute namely Optimization and Decision Support Systems in Civil Engineering. Planning for this ASI commenced in late 1986 when Andrew Templeman and I discussed developments in the use of the systems approach in civil engineering. A little later it became clear that much of this approach could be realised through the use of knowledge-based systems and artificial intelligence techniques. Both Don Grierson and John Gero indicated at an early stage how important it would be to include knowledge-based systems within the scope of the Institute. The title of the Institute could have been: 'Civil Engineering Systems' as this would have reflected the range of systems applications to civil engineering problems considered by the Institute. These volumes therefore reflect the full range of these problems including: structural analysis and design; water resources engineering; geotechnical engineering; transportation and environmental engineering.
