Each of the principal analysis techniques inherent in the design process are summarized and their uses are illustrated using numerous, fully worked and graded examples of international application, since it is not dependent on design codes. Where appropriate, detailed mathematical concepts are explained and integrated within the text. With an uncommonly broad scope and an easy-to-follow step-by-step approach, this key text is ideal for first to final year students on civil/structural engineering, building and architecture courses as well as a practical reference for practising consultants, contractors and architects.

838 pages - Publisher: CRC Press; 2nd edition (December, 2013) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 0824728815 - ISBN-13: 978-1466595262 ...

This second edition of Examples in Structural Analysis uses a step-by-step approach and provides an extensive collection of fully worked and graded examples for a wide variety of structural analysis problems. It presents detailed information on the methods of solutions to problems and the results obtained. Also given within the text is a summary of each of the principal analysis techniques inherent in the design process and where appropriate, an explanation of the mathematical models used. The text emphasises that software should only be used if designers have the appropriate knowledge and understanding of the mathematical modelling, assumptions and limitations inherent in the programs they use. It establishes the use of hand-methods for obtaining approximate solutions during preliminary design and an independent check on the answers obtained from computer analyses. What’s New in the Second Edition: New chapters cover the development and use of influence lines for determinate and indeterminate beams, as well as the use of approximate analyses for indeterminate pin-jointed and rigid-jointed plane-frames. This edition includes a rewrite of the chapter on buckling instability, expands on beams and on the use of the unit load method applied to singly redundant frames. The x-y-z co-ordinate system and symbols have been modified to reflect the conventions adopted in the structural Eurocodes.

Rolf Isermann, Marco Münchhof ... 705 pages - Publisher: Springer; (November, 2014) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 3642422675 - ISBN-13: 978-3642422676 ...

Precise dynamic models of processes are required for many applications, ranging from control engineering to the natural sciences and economics. Frequently, such precise models cannot be derived using theoretical considerations alone. Therefore, they must be determined experimentally. This book treats the determination of dynamic models based on measurements taken at the process, which is known as system identification or process identification. Both offline and online methods are presented, i.e. methods that post-process the measured data as well as methods that provide models during the measurement. The book is theory-oriented and application-oriented and most methods covered have been used successfully in practical applications for many different processes. Illustrative examples in this book with real measured data range from hydraulic and electric actuators up to combustion engines. Real experimental data is also provided on the Springer webpage, allowing readers to gather their first experience with the methods presented in this book. Among others, the book covers the following subjects: determination of the non-parametric frequency response, (fast) Fourier transform, correlation analysis, parameter estimation with a focus on the method of Least Squares and modifications, identification of time-variant processes, identification in closed-loop, identification of continuous time processes, and subspace methods. Some methods for nonlinear system identification are also considered, such as the Extended Kalman filter and neural networks. The different methods are compared by using a real three-mass oscillator process, a model of a drive train. For many identification methods, hints for the practical implementation and application are provided. The book is intended to meet the needs of students and practicing engineers working in research and development, design and manufacturing.

Due to an ever-decreasing supply in raw materials and stringent constraints on conventional energy sources, demand for lightweight, efficient and low-cost structures has become crucially important in modern engineering design. This requires engineers to search for optimal and robust design options to address design problems that are commonly large in scale and highly nonlinear, making finding solutions challenging. In the past two decades, metaheuristic algorithms have shown promising power, efficiency and versatility in solving these difficult optimization problems. This book examines the latest developments of metaheuristics and their applications in structural engineering, construction engineering and earthquake engineering, offering practical case studies as examples to demonstrate real-world applications. Topics cover a range of areas within engineering, including big bang-big crunch approach, genetic algorithms, genetic programming, harmony search, swarm intelligence and some other metaheuristic methods. Case studies include structural identification, vibration analysis and control, topology optimization, transport infrastructure design, design of reinforced concrete, performance-based design of structures and smart pavement management. With its wide range of everyday problems and solutions, Metaheursitic Applications in Structures and Infrastructures can serve as a supplementary text for design courses and computation in engineering as well as a reference for researchers and engineers in metaheuristics, optimization in civil engineering and computational intelligence. * Review of the latest development of metaheuristics in engineering. * Detailed algorithm descriptions with focus on practical implementation. * Uses practical case studies as examples and applications.

Researchers in the engineering industry and academia are making important advances on reliability-based design and modeling of uncertainty when data is limited. Non deterministic approaches have enabled industries to save billions by reducing design and warranty costs and by improving quality. Considering the lack of comprehensive and definitive presentations on the subject, Engineering Design Reliability Handbook is a valuable addition to the reliability literature. It presents the perspectives of experts from the industry, national labs, and academia on non-deterministic approaches including probabilistic, interval and fuzzy sets-based methods, generalized information theory, Dempster-Shaffer evidence theory, and robust reliability. It also presents recent advances in all important fields of reliability design including modeling of uncertainty, reliability assessment of both static and dynamic components and systems, design decision making in the face of uncertainty, and reliability validation. The editors and the authors also discuss documented success stories and quantify the benefits of these approaches.
