When produced correctly, concrete can be extremely strong, with high load-bearing capacity and superior durability. Another noteworthy property is the relatively low amount of energy and resources consumed during production. Super-High-Strength High Performance Concrete brings together the results of a major research project by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Doctoral Foundation of the Ministry of Education of China. This ten-year project explored the properties, performance, and potential of super-high-strength high performance (SHSHP) concrete. With a view towards improved production that optimizes the strength and durability of concrete, the book presents a host of topics on the cutting edge of concrete research.

These include: A new method for the specific strength analysis of the pozzolanic effect of active mineral admixtures +Analysis of the strength composition of SHSHP concrete +Optimization of raw materials and mix proportion parameters for strength and flowability +Analysis of the mechanical properties, deformation, and durability of SHSHP concrete +Methods for decreasing autogeneous shrinkage + Testing methods for SHSHP concrete. The book concludes with a consideration of the practical and economic benefits of these optimized concretes. A systematic study of the different aspects of this essential commodity as well as the future direction of concrete science and technology, this book is a valuable resource for material scientists and engineers engaged in developing better structures.

Robin Fell, Patrick MacGregor, David Stapledon, Graeme Bell, Mark Foster ... 1382 pages - Publisher: CRC Press; 2nd edition (December, 2014) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 1138000086 - ISBN-13: 978-1138000087

This book provides a comprehensive text on the geotechnical and geological aspects of the investigations for and the design and construction of new dams and the review and assessment of existing dams. The emphasis is on embankment dams, but much of the text, particularly those parts related to geology, can be used for concrete gravity and arch dams. The book aims to provide practising dam engineers and geologists with a practical approach, as well as to give university students an insight into the subject of dam engineering. The theoretical basis upon which design methods have been developed is included so readers develop a proper understanding of the limitations of the methods. All phases of investigation, design and construction are covered, from the initial assessment of a damsite and the development and carrying out of a detailed site investigation program, through to the preliminary and detailed design phases and ultimately the construction phase. The assessment of existing dams, including the analysis of risks posed by those dams, is also discussed. This wholly revised and significantly expanded 2nd edition includes a lengthy new chapter on the assessment of the likelihood of failure of dams by internal erosion and piping.

Space frames provide a lightweight solution to the problem of creating large span enclosures free from obstructions. They are employed in many major construction projects across the world, as documented in this authoritatively written volume. This is the first in-depth book to present all instances and applications of space frames in various engineering schemes. It uses case studies and numerous illustrations to examine steel space frames from their design to their structural engineering performance.

Designed for use in a second course on linear algebra, Matrix Theory and Applications with MATLAB covers the basics of the subject-from a review of matrix algebra through vector spaces to matrix calculus and unitary similarity-in a presentation that stresses insight, understanding, and applications. Among its most outstanding features is the integration of MATLAB throughout the text. Each chapter includes a MATLAB subsection that discusses the various commands used to do the computations in that section and offers code for the graphics and some algorithms used in the text. All of the material is presented from a matrix point of view with enough rigor for students to learn to compose arguments and proofs and adjust the material to cover other problems. The treatment includes optional subsections covering applications, and the final chapters move beyond basic matrix theory to discuss more advanced topics, such as decompositions, positive definite matrices, graphics, and topology. Filled with illustrations, examples, and exercises that reinforce understanding, Matrix Theory and Applications with MATLAB allows readers to experiment and visualize results in a way that no other text does. Its rigor, use of MATLAB, and focus on applications better prepares them to use the material in their future work and research, to extend the material, and perhaps obtain new results of their own.

Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) is an innovative material used successfully throughout the world. It is a highly flowable, non-segregating concrete that can spread into place, fill the formwork, and encapsulate the reinforcement without any mechanical consolidation, improving the overall efficiency of a concrete construction project. SCC mixtures are highly fluid, yet their flowing properties can be adapted for a range of applications and allow practitioners to select and determine levels of filling ability, passing ability, and stability. Self-Consolidating Concrete: Applying What We Know discusses all aspects of SCC, including: Benefits and limitations + Raw material components + Mixture proportions  + Production and quality control + Placement and curing. Presenting a basis for consistently producing and applying SCC in a regular production environment, this book is written from the perspective of the concrete practitioner. It uses descriptions and case studies throughout, as examples of specific types of applications, to identify where the practitioner needs to focus attention. This book bridges the gap between research and practice. It links science with practical application, describing a number of projects and types of applications where SCC has been used successfully. It will be useful for new practitioners as well as for those already using SCC.

Mario Paz ... 545 pages - Publisher: Springer; (October, 2012) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 1461358590 - ISBN-13: 978-1461358596

The subject of earthquake engineering has been the focus of my teaching and research for many years. Thus, when Mario Paz, the editor of this handbook, asked me to write a Foreword, I was interested and honored by his request. Worldwide, people are beginning to understand the severity of the danger to present and future generations caused by the destruction of the environment. Earthquakes pose a similar threat; thus, the proper use of methods for earthquake-resistant design and construction is vitally important for countries that are at high risk of being subjected to strong-motion earthquakes. Most seismic activity is the result of tectonic earthquakes. Tectonic earthquakes are very special events in that, although they occur frequently, their probability of becoming natural hazards for a specific urban area is very small. When a severe earthquake does occur near an urban area, however, its consequences are very large in terms of structural destruction and human suffering.
