Tested techniques for designing fire-resistant structures: Structural Fire Loads bridges the gap between prescriptive and performance-based methods for the design of fire-resistant buildings. The book streamlines complex computer analyses so that an approximate analytical expression can be easily used in structural fire load analysis and design. Simplified versions of energy, mass, and momentum equations are provided in dimensionless form with their solutions in tabular form. Step-by-step examples using standard structural systems, such as beams, trusses, frames, and arches, are also presented in this practical guide. Using the proven methods in this book, all types of fires can be addressed in the design process. Coverage includes: Overview of current practice * Structural fire load and computer models * Differential equations and assumptions * Simplifications of differential equations *Fire load and severity of fires * Structural analysis and design.

Structure as Architecture presents a comprehensive analysis of the indispensable role of structure in architecture. An exploration, as well as a celebration, of structure, the book draws on a series of design studies and case study examples to illustrate how structure can be employed to realize a wide range of concepts in contemporary architecture. By examining design principles that relate to both architecture and structural engineering, Andrew Charleson provides new insights into the relationship between both the technical and aesthetic aspects of architecture. Now in its second edition, the text has been extensively revised and updated throughout. Features include: A brand new chapter on hidden structure, adding to the material on exposed structures * Two new chapters on using structure to realise common architectural concepts through a combination of precedents and creative design * Over 50 new case studies from across the globe * Easy-to-understand diagrams and a highly visual design to aid understanding and accessibility. More than two hundred case studies of contemporary buildings from countries such as the UK, the US, France, Germany, Spain, Hong Kong, Australia and Japan illustrate how a thorough integration of structure adds layers of richness and enhances the realisation of architectural design concepts.

This book discusses design aspects of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) members, including the behavior of the SFRC and its modeling. It also examines the effect of various parameters governing the response of SFRC members in detail. Unlike other publications available in the form of guidelines, which mainly describe design methods based on experimental results, it describes the basic concepts and principles of designing structural members using SFRC as a structural material, predominantly subjected to flexure and shear. Although applications to special structures, such as bridges, retaining walls, tanks and silos are not specifically covered, the fundamental design concepts remain the same and can easily be extended to these elements. It introduces the principles and related theories for predicting the role of steel fibers in reinforcing concrete members concisely and logically, and presents various material models to predict the response of SFRC members in detail. These are then gradually extended to develop an analytical flexural model for the analysis and design of SFRC members. The lack of such a discussion is a major hindrance to the adoption of SFRC as a structural material in routine design practice. This book helps users appraise the role of fiber as reinforcement in concrete members used alone and/or along with conventional rebars. Applications to singly and doubly reinforced beams and slabs are illustrated with examples, using both SFRC and conventional reinforced concrete as a structural material. The influence of the addition of steel fibers on various mechanical properties of the SFRC members is discussed in detail, which is invaluable in helping designers and engineers create optimum designs. Lastly, it describes the generally accepted methods for specifying the steel fibers at the site along with the SFRC mixing methods, storage and transport and explains in detail methods to validate the adopted design. This book is useful to practicing engineers, researchers, and students.

Cement production is known to be a polluting and energy-intensive industry. Cement plants account for 5 percent of global emissions of carbon dioxide and one of the main causes of global warming. However, cement it is literally the glue of progress. Designing Green Cement Plants provides the tools and techniques for designing new large cement plants that would promote sustainable growth, preserve natural resources to the maximum possible extent and make least possible additions to the Greenhouse Gases that cause global warming. Brief and but authoritative, this title embraces new technologies and methods such as Carbon Capture and Sequestration, as well as methods for harnessing renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. The author also discusses the efficient use of energy and materials through the use recycling. In addition, this book also examines thepossibilities of developing green cement substitutes such as Calera, Caliix, Novacem, Aether and Geopolymer cements.

Includes the tools and methods for reducing the emissions of greenhouse Gases + Explores technologies such as: carbon capture and storage and substitute cements + Provides essential data to determining the unique factors involved in designing large new green cement plants + Includes interactive excel spreadsheets + Methods for preforming a cost benefits analysis for the production of green cements as opposed to conventional OPC.
