Particulate discrete element analysis is becoming increasingly popular for research in geomechanics as well as geology, chemical engineering, powder technology, petroleum engineering and in studying the physics of granular materials. With increased computing power, practising engineers are also becoming more interested in using this technology for analysis in industrial applications. This is the first single work on Discrete Element Modelling (DEM) providing the information to get started with this powerful numerical modelling approach. Written by an independent author with experience both in developing DEM codes and using commercial codes, this book provides the basic details of the numerical method and the approaches used to interpret the results of DEM simulations. Providing a basic overview of the numerical method, Particulate Discrete Element Modelling discusses issues related to time integration and numerical stability, particle types, contact modelling and boundary conditions. It summarizes approaches to interpret DEM data so that users can maximize their insight into the material response using DEM. The aim of this book is to provide both users and prospective users of DEM with a concise reference book that includes tips to optimize their usage. Particulate Discrete Element Modelling is suitable both for first time DEM analysts as well as more experienced users. It will be of use to professionals, researchers and higher level students, as it presents a theoretical overview of DEM as well as practical guidance on running DEM simulations and interpreting DEM simulation data. Features: Draws on author’s experience in developing DEM codes and using commercial codes. + Gives theoretical overview of DEM with practical guidance on running DEM simulations and interpreting DEM simulation data.

Theories of surface waves develop since the end of XIX century and many fundamental problems like existence, phase and group velocities, attenuation (quality factor), mode conversion, etc. have been, in part successfully, solved within the framework of such simple models as ideal fluids or linear elasticity. However, a sufficiently complete presentation of this subject, particularly for solids, is still missing in the literature. The sole exception is the book of I. A. Viktorov which contains an extensive discussion of fundamental properties of surface waves in homogeneous and stratified linear elastic solids with particular emphasis on contributions of Russian scientists. Unfortunately, the book has never been translated to English and its Russian version is also hardly available. Practical applications of surface waves develop intensively since a much shorter period of time than theories even though the motivation of discoverers of surface waves such as Lord Rayleigh stems from their appearance in geophysics and seismology. Nowadays the growing interest in practical applications of surface waves stem from the following two main factors: surface waves are ideal for developing relatively cheap and convenient methods of nondestructive testing of various systems spanning from nanomaterials. Selected papers from the First International Symposium on Pavement and Geotechnical Engineering for Transportation Infrastructure held in Nanchang, China, June 5-7, 2011. Sponsored by the Nanchang Hangkong University and the International Association of Chinese Infrastructure Professionals (IACIP) in cooperation with the Geo-Institute of ASCE. Pavement and Geotechnical Engineering for Transportation contains 20 papers that represent the latest developments in the application of soil, rock, and paving materials to the study and application of geomechanics and transportation geotechnology. Topics include pavement structure and subgrade preparation such as: the use of chemical additives and geogrid reinforcement; performance assessment of concrete and asphalt mixtures; mathematical models for the simulation of geotechnical problems; and evaluation of soil types in relation to slope failure, consolidation, and embankment behavior. This Geotechnical Practice Publication focuses on the application of geomechanics in transportation and will be of interest to both geotechnical engineers and transportation professionals.

Modelling forms a vital part of all engineering design, yet many hydraulic engineers are not fully aware of the assumptions they make. These assumptions can have important consequences when choosing the best model to inform design decisions. Considering the advantages and limitations of both physical and mathematical methods, this book will help you identify the most appropriate form of analysis for the hydraulic engineering application in question. All models require the knowledge of their background, good data and careful interpretation and so this book also provides guidance on the range of accuracy to be expected of the model simulations and how they should be related to the prototype.

Applications to models include: open channel systems - closed conduit flows - storm drainage systems - estuaries - coastal and nearshore structures -hydraulic structures. This an invaluable guide for students and professionals.

Revised and updated, this second edition of Design of Hydraulic Gates maintains the same goal as the original: to be used as a textbook and a manual of design of gates, presenting the main aspects of design, manufacture, installation and operation of hydraulic gates, while introducing new products, technologies and calculation procedures. This edition included new chapters on intake gates and trashrack design, highlighting the aspects of safety, operational and maintenance procedures. To improve the strength against structural failure of intake trashracks, the author proposes a series of rigid calculation assumptions, design parameters and manufacturing procedures, which will certainly result in safer trashracks. Some 340 drawings and photographs, 82 tables, 107 references and 23 worked examples help the reader to understand the basic concepts and calculation methods presented.
