The behavior of the ground is crucial to the stability of structures during earthquake conditions. Our understanding of this behavior depends on a knowledge of soil dynamics and the deformation of soils during these catastrophic events. This book provides a comprehensive study of this subject, presenting much of the valuable material accumulated by Japanese researchers over recent years. The author covers theory, laboratory tests, and findings from the field, providing helpful guidance for civil engineers undertaking the critical task of protecting structures in vulnerable zones.

From Charpy to Present Impact Testing contains 52 peer-reviewed papers selected from those presented at the Charpy Centenary Conference held in Poitiers, France, 2-5 October 2001. The name of Charpy remains associated with impact testing on notched specimens. At a time when many steam engines exploded, engineers were preoccupied with studying the resistance of steels to impact loading. The Charpy test has provided invaluable indications on the impact properties of materials. It revealed the brittle ductile transition of ferritic steels. The Charpy test is able to provide more quantitative results by instrumenting the striker, which allows the evolution of the applied load during the impact to be determined. The Charpy test is of great importance to evaluate the embrittlement of steels by irradiation in nuclear reactors. Progress in computer programming has allowed for a computer model of the test to be developed; a difficult task in view of its dynamic, three dimensional, adiabatic nature. Together with precise observations of the processes of fracture, this opens the possibility of transferring quantitatively the results of Charpy tests to real components. This test has also been extended to materials other than steels, and is also frequently used to test polymeric materials. Thus the Charpy test is a tool of great importance and is still at the root of a number of investigations; this is the reason why it was felt that the centenary of the Charpy test had to be celebrated. The Société Française de Métallurgie et de Matériaux decided to organise an international conference which was put under the auspices of the European Society for the Integrity of Structures (ESIS). This Charpy Centenary Conference (CCC 2001) was held in Poitiers, at Futuroscope in October 2001. More than 150 participants from 17 countries took part in the discussions and about one hundred presentations were given. An exhibition of equipment showed, not only present day testing machines, but also one of the first Charpy pendulums, brought all the way from Imperial College in London. From Charpy to Present Impact Testing puts together a number of significant contributions. They are classified into 6 headings: • Keynote lectures, • Micromechanisms, • Polymers, • Testing procedures, • Applications, • Modelling.

This book discusses the development of useful models and their applications in soil and water engineering. It covers various modeling methods, including groundwater recharge estimation, rainfall-runoff modeling using artificial neural networks, development and application of a water balance model and a HYDRUS-2D model for cropped fields, a multi-model approach for stream flow simulation, multi-criteria analysis for construction of groundwater structures in hard rock terrains, hydrologic modeling of watersheds using remote sensing, and GIS and AGNPS.

This book presents practical applications of the finite element method to general differential equations. The underlying strategy of deriving the finite element solution is introduced using linear ordinary differential equations, thus allowing the basic concepts of the finite element solution to be introduced without being obscured by the additional mathematical detail required when applying this technique to partial differential equations. The author generalizes the presented approach to partial differential equations which include nonlinearities. The book also includes variations of the finite element method such as different classes of meshes and basic functions. Practical application of the theory is emphasised, with development of all concepts leading ultimately to a description of their computational implementation illustrated using Matlab functions. The target audience primarily comprises applied researchers and practitioners in engineering, but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students.

This text serves as a concise introduction to the ocean of information collectively known as “Engineering Mathematics.” Admittedly, compiling everything into a short book that is useful to any audience is an impossible task; therefore, we picked a few main ideas holding up the mathematics within the engineering curriculum instead of stuffing all of the details into such a small package. This text addresses conceptual understanding as often as possible by providing an intuitive basis for formalized study within engineering/mathematics. Whether you are a math or science instructor tasked to teach an engineering class, a high school student looking into engineering, or an engineering student already, we hope you are able to walk away from this text with tangible outcomes—maybe even a refined perspective on the subject.

Utilizes both Computer- and Hand-Based Calculations: Modern practice in geomechanics is becoming increasingly reliant on computer-based software, much of which can be obtained through the Internet. In Geomechanics in Soil, Rock, and Environmental Engineering the application of these numerical techniques is examined not only for soil mechanics, but also for rock mechanics and environmental applications. Geomechanics in Soil, Rock, and Environmental Engineering should appeal to students in their final undergraduate course in geomechanics or master’s students, and should also serve as a useful reference to practitioners in the field of geomechanics, reflecting the author’s background in both industry and academia… For Use in Complex Analysis: It deals with the modern analysis of shallow foundations, deep foundations, retaining structures, and excavation and tunneling. In recent years, the environment has become more and more important, and so it also deals with municipal and mining waste and solutions for the disposal and containment of the waste. Many fresh solutions to problems are presented to enable more accurate and advanced designs to be carried out.  A Practical Reference for Industry Professionals, This Illuminating Book: Offers a broad range of coverage in soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and environmental engineering * Incorporates the author‘s more than 40 years of academic and practical design experience * Describes the latest applications that have emerged in the last ten years * Supplies references readily available online for futher research.
