This comprehensive handbook on the hydraulic design of labyrinth spillways - from theory to current practice - presents a state-of-the-art method for the effective design of labyrinth weirs. The book first provides a fundamental understanding of the theory of labyrinth weirs and continues with detailed sections on significant factors that affect the discharge characteristics of labyrinth weirs such as crest shape, weir height, and sidewall angle. The most common design curves are discussed, and from these a recommendation is developed for only one design curve to be used in future designs. But because site conditions often vary so much from the idealized conditions described in this book, a section on site-specific modeling criteria is included for making accurate predictions of prototype performance. In its review of past studies, the book closely examines many long held concepts, especially concerning the idea of interference, nappe oscillation, and the definition of which head to use in design computations, and revises them in an effort to advance current thinking based on the latest research. With its review of theoretical concepts and its straightforward presentation of the practical aspects of design, both practicing engineers and researchers will find this book to be a "must-have" reference for the hydraulic design of labyrinth weirs. The chapters include: Analytic Development; Nappe Interference; Crest Shapes; Design Curves; Downstream Chute; Nappe Oscillation; Design; Sedimentation and Ice; Aeration; Special Cases; and Model Studies. To help guide the designer, an appendix provides a representative sample of the prototype installations and their dimensions that have been constructed worldwide.

This book describes the latest methods and practices in the field of subsurface drainage for slope stability. Groundwater pressure significantly affects slope stability; general principles of reducing pressure by drainage are comprehensively addressed. Details of the mechanics of water flow in soil, rock, aggregates, geotextiles, and pipes are covered. Filtration theory and filter design are presented in a geotechnical context along with the general characteristics of drains and the assessment of their performance. Field and laboratory investigations, site instrumentation and its monitoring, groundwater computations resulting from field investigations, and various methods of slope stability analysis are discussed. The materials and construction procedures used in trench, blanket, and horizontal drains are examined in depth. Also presented is an account of granular, ferric and calcium carbonate clogging mechanisms, and maintenance procedures for controlling them. Appendices include a field test for dissolved ferrous iron and case examples. Geotechnical practitioners, students, and beginners will find this book to be a comprehensive reference for every aspect of subsurface drainage for slope stabilization. Chapters include: Groundwater, Stability, and Drainage; Flow in Granular Materials and Synthetic Fabrics; Flow in Pipes; Protective Filters; Guidelines on Groundwater and Drainage; Field Investigations; Instrumentation; Laboratory Tests; Groundwater Computations; Slope Stability Analysis; Drain Construction Materials; Points on Design and Construction; Trench Drains; Drainage of Retaining Structures; Horizontal Drains; Wells; Monitoring; Clogging; and Maintenance.

Modern fastening techniques are increasingly being used to transfer loads into concrete and masonry structures. In spite of this fact knowledge of the behaviour of such systems is very limited and there is no generally accepted design method.

This book has been written by a group of eminent authors from western Europe, Canada, the USA and Japan and with the specific aim of: Compiling and comparing published research on the behaviour of fastening systems; proposing a consistent approach to the design of fastenings based on current empirical and theoretical models; and developing design methods that account for the effects of fastenings to concrete and masonry structures for all types of load including monotonic, sustained, fatigue, seismic and impact loads as well as the influences of environmental effects.

In this report, the behaviour of fastenings in concrete and masonry for the entire range of loading types, as well as the influence of the environmental effects, is reviewed, based on experimental results from various parts of the world. The existing design approaches are compared with the available experimental data, and a consistent design method is recommended.

The publication is applicable to both new constructions and the repair and strengthening of existing structures.

Linear Algebra: A First Course with Applications explores the fundamental ideas of linear algebra, including vector spaces, subspaces, basis, span, linear independence, linear transformation, eigenvalues, and eigenvectors, as well as a variety of applications, from inventories to graphics to Google’s PageRank.

Unlike other texts on the subject, this classroom-tested book gives students enough time to absorb the material by focusing on vector spaces early on and using computational sections as numerical interludes. It offers introductions to Maple™, MATLAB®, and TI-83 Plus for calculating matrix inverses, determinants, eigenvalues, and eigenvectors.

Moving from the specific to the general, the author raises questions, provides motivation, and discusses strategy before presenting answers. Discussions of motivation and strategy include content and context to help students learn.
