Production of Portland cement is responsible for about seven percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. The pressure to make the production of concrete more sustainable, or "greener", is considerable and increasing. This requires a wholesale shift in processes, materials and methods in the concrete industry. Pure Portland cement will need to be replaced by more complex binary, tertiary or even quaternary binders, including other types of cementitious materials. We can expect an increasing use of high performance concrete, primarily because of its high sustainability and durability. Much more attention will have to be paid to the proper curing of the concrete if we want to improve its life expectancy. Presenting the latest advances in the science of concrete this book focuses particularly on sustainability, durability, and economy. It explores the potential for increased sustainability in concrete from the initial mixing right through to its behaviour in complex structures exposed to different types of loads and aggressive environments.

This treatise contains topics on Solid Mechanics, the Theory of Slender Members and an Introduction to the Theory of Structures, usually taught in the disciplines of Strength of Materials of most Engineering courses, such as Civil, Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering. In relation to the most widely known treatises on Mechanics and Strength of Materials, a greater scientific exactness and an extra emphasis on the theoretical justification of the topics explained may be stressed.  Axioms and non-demonstrated simplifying hypotheses, which are common in this kind of book, are avoided. The depth of the explanation is at an intermediate level between those works and treatises based on a mathematical approach to the Theory of Elasticity and Continuum Mechanics. However, the topics are always introduced from a physical point of view, which is fundamental for an Engineer, and are anchored on over 300 figures of high graphical quality.

Language: English - ISBN-10: 1560327014 - ISBN-13: 978-1560327011 ...

In this distinctive text, author Ever Barbero focuses on the introduction to composite materials design and its fundamental concepts. The logical order of topic presentation on composites is a major strength of the text. The text is so well written that any engineering student can easy understand the fundamentals of composites without having prior knowledge of composites. Design content is distributed throughout the book in a form that attracts the reader into the design rather than the mathematical complexity that usually exists in mechanics of composites. This book would be my first choice to adopt to teach the fundamentals of composites to a class of mainly undergraduate students.

The in situ rehabilitation or upgrading of reinforced concrete members using bonded steel plates is an effective, convenient and economic method of improving structural performance. However, disadvantages inherent in the use of steel have stimulated research into the possibility of using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials in its place, providing a non-corrosive, more versatile strengthening system. This book presents a detailed study of the flexural strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete members using fibre reinforces polymer composite plates. It is based to a large extent on material developed or provided by the consortium which studied the technology of plate bonding to upgrade structural units using carbon fibre / polymer composite materials. The research and trial tests were undertaken as part of the ROBUST project, one of several ventures in the UK Government's DTI-LINK Structural Composites Programme. The book has been designed for practising structural and civil engineers seeking to understand the principles and design technology of plate bonding, and for final year undergraduate and postgraduate engineers studying the principles of highway and bridge engineering and structural engineering. This book discusses design aspects of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) members, including the behavior of the SFRC and its modeling. It also examines the effect of various parameters governing the response of SFRC members in detail. Unlike other publications available in the form of guidelines, which mainly describe design methods based on experimental results, it describes the basic concepts and principles of designing structural members using SFRC as a structural material, predominantly subjected to flexure and shear. Although applications to special structures, such as bridges, retaining walls, tanks and silos are not specifically covered, the fundamental design concepts remain the same and can easily be extended to these elements. It introduces the principles and related theories for predicting the role of steel fibers in reinforcing concrete members concisely and logically, and presents various material models to predict the response of SFRC members in detail. These are then gradually extended to develop an analytical flexural model for the analysis and design of SFRC members. The lack of such a discussion is a major hindrance to the adoption of SFRC as a structural material in routine design practice. This book helps users appraise the role of fiber as reinforcement in concrete members used alone and/or along with conventional rebars. Applications to singly and doubly reinforced beams and slabs are illustrated with examples, using both SFRC and conventional reinforced concrete as a structural material. The influence of the addition of steel fibers on various mechanical properties of the SFRC members is discussed in detail, which is invaluable in helping designers and engineers create optimum designs. Lastly, it describes the generally accepted methods for specifying the steel fibers at the site along with the SFRC mixing methods, storage and transport and explains in detail methods to validate the adopted design. This book is useful to practicing engineers, researchers, and students.
