ASCE 7 is the US standard for identifying minimum design loads for buildings and other structures. ASCE 7 covers many load types, of which wind is one. The purpose of this book is to provide structural and architectural engineers with the practical state-of-the-art knowledge and tools needed for designing and retrofitting buildings for wind loads. The book will also cover wind-induced loss estimation. This new edition include a guide to the thoroughly revised, 2010 version of the ASCE 7 Standard provisions for wind loads; incorporate major advances achieved in recent years in the design of tall buildings for wind; present material on retrofitting and loss estimation; and improve the presentation of the material to increase its usefulness to structural engineers. Key features: * New focus on tall buildings helps make the analysis and design guidance easier and less complex. * Covers the new simplified design methods of ASCE 7-10, guiding designers to clearly understand the spirit and letter of the provisions and use the design methods with confidence and ease. * Includes new coverage of retrofitting for wind load resistance and loss estimation from hurricane winds. * Thoroughly revised and updated to conform with current practice and research.

M. Y. H. Bangash ... 706 pages - Publisher: Springer; (2011) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 3540938176 - ISBN-13: 978-3540938170 ...

This concise work provides a general introduction to the design of buildings which must be resistant to the effect of earthquakes. A major part of this design involves the building structure which has a primary role in preventing serious damage or structural collapse. Much of the material presented in this book examines building structures. Due to the recent discovery of vertical components, it examines not only the resistance to lateral forces but also analyses the disastrous influence of vertical components. The work is written for Practicing Civil, Structural, and Mechanical Engineers, Seismologists and Geoscientists. It serves as a knowledge source for graduate students and their instructors.

Karoly A. Zalka ... 284 pages - Publisher: CRC Press; (July, 2012) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 0415595738 - ISBN-13: 978-0415595735 ...

A sound and more modern Eurocode-based approach to design is the global approach, where the structures are considered as whole units, rather than to use traditional element-based design procedures. Although large frameworks and even whole buildings are now routinely analysed using computer packages, structural engineers do not always understand complex three-dimensional behaviour and thus manipulate the stiffness and the location of the bracing units to achieve an optimum structural arrangement. This guide deals with two categories of multi-storey structures. It can be used for the plane stress, stability and frequency analysis of individual bracing units such as frameworks, coupled shear walls and cores. In addition, and perhaps more importantly, it can be used for the three dimensional stress, stability and frequency analysis of whole buildings consisting of such bracing units. The closed-form solutions in the book may also prove to be useful at the preliminary design stage when quick checks are needed with different structural arrangements. Their usefulness cannot be overemphasized for checking the results of a finite element (computer-based) analysis when the input procedure involves tens of thousands of items of data and where mishandling one item of data may have catastrophic consequences. In addition to the critical load, the fundamental frequency, the maximum stresses and the top deflection of frameworks, coupled shear walls, cores and their spatial assemblies, a very important new piece of information is the "safety factor" of the structure (either a single unit or a whole building), which also acts as the performance indicator of the structure. MathCAD worksheets can be downloaded from the book’s accompanying website.

J. A. Charles ... 336 pages - Publisher: IHS BRE Press; (November, 2010) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 1860817270 - ISBN-13: 978-1860817274

Foundations affect how the main structure of a building behaves and can be a major factor in determining whether or not it performs satisfactorily in the long term. Decisions about foundations for low-rise buildings are often made by people who have only limited understanding of the engineering of the ground: this book has been written for such people and their professional advisors, including architects, surveyors, loss adjusters, planners, insurance underwriters and property developers. BRE has published guidance over a number of years on various aspects of foundations for low-rise buildings, and Geotechnics for building professionals brings together this guidance into a single unified format and approach. It gives an overview of ground behaviour and geotechnics, but focuses on shallow foundations for low-rise buildings. The first five chapters of the book cover regulations and legislation for foundations and contaminated land, types of ground, soil behaviour and ground assessment. Two chapters focus on foundation design and foundations on difficult ground. Brownfield land and ground treatment are then discussed, and the last three chapters deal with foundation movement and damage, remedial treatment and underpinning, and ancillary works (hardcore, soakaways, drains, small embankments, small retaining walls, freestanding walls).

Michael Seidel, D. S. Sturge ... 240 pages - Publisher: Ernst&Sohn; 1st edition (August, 2009) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 3433029229 - ISBN-13: 978-3433029220 ...

Tensile surface structures are the visual expression of an intensive rethinking of the topic of building envelopes by designers. Advances in design methods, materials, construction elements and assembly and erection planning in the field of lightweight construction are enabling ever more exacting applications of tensile structures with envelope and structural functions, especially in roofing over large clear spans without internal support. However, the particular mechanical characteristics of the materials used in the construction of textile structures demand consideration of the question of "buildability". This book provides answers by discussing the fundamental influence of material manufacture and assembly in deciding the most suitable type of building or structure and its detailing in the design process. The fundamentals of material composition, manufacturing process, patterning and the behaviour of flexible structural systems are all explained here, as well as their use as structural and connection elements, and special attention is given to the erection of wide-span lightweight structures. The erection equipment is described, as well as the lifting and tensioning process and the construction methods used to erect the characteristic types of tensile structures, illustrated with a selection of example projects.

Muhammad Hadi, Mehmet Eren Uz ... 306 pages - Publisher: CRC Press; 1st edition (October, 2017) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 0815391722 - ISBN-13: 978-0815391722 ...

Introducing important concepts in the study of earthquakes related to retrofitting of structures to be made earthquake resistant. The book investigates the pounding effects on base-isolated buildings, the soil-structure-interaction effects on adjacent buildings due to the impact, the seismic protection of adjacent buildings and the mitigation of earthquakeinduced vibrations of two adjacent structures. These concepts call for a new understanding of controlled systems with passive-active dampers and semi-active dampers. The passive control strategy of coupled buildings is investigated for seismic protection in comparison to active and semi-active control strategies.
