Written for civil, structural and geotechnical engineers, this book presents the latest research and practical experience in the design of high-arch dams in seismically active regions, from an author team that is highly active and experienced in the design, development and construction of 300m high arch dams. The book covers the entire subject of dam design for seismic regions, including seismic input mechanisms and modeling, non-linear analysis techniques for dam structure and foundations, concrete material properties, and simulation techniques for dam design. Of particular value are the real-world experimental data and design case studies that enhance the book and ensure that readers can apply the theoretical content to their own projects. Break through the conventional concepts in civil engineering discipline and focus on applying new techniques from other subject fields to seismic safety on high-arch dam design in an innovative way. + Shows how to model and evaluate seismic safety of dams using seismic input, dam response and dynamic resistance. + Summarizes the methodology and approaches applied to high-arch dam design and construction in China, demonstrates the selection of site-specific seismic input parameters, and enables the reader to apply this to their own specific design challenge.

Structural Steel Design to Eurocode 3 and AISC Specifications deals with the theory and practical applications of structural steel design in Europe and the USA. The book covers appropriate theoretical and background information, followed by a more design‐oriented coverage focusing on European and United States specifications and practices, allowing the reader to directly compare the approaches and results of both codes. Chapters follow a general plan, covering: ? A general section covering the relevant topics for the chapter, based on classical theory and recent research developments ? A detailed section covering design and detailing to Eurocode 3 specification ? A detailed section covering design and detailing to AISC specifications Fully worked examples are using both codes are presented. With construction companies working in increasingly international environments, engineers are more and more likely to encounter both codes. Written for design engineers and students of civil and structural engineering, this book will help both groups to become conversant with both code systems.

This text introduces the basic equations of the theory of structures. Conventional presentations of these equations follow the ideas of elastic analysis, introduced nearly two hundred years ago. The present book is written against the background of advances made in structural theory during the last fifty years, notably by the introduction of so-called plastic theory. Tests on real structures in the twentieth century revealed that structural states predicted by elastic analysis cannot in fact be observed in practice, whereas plastic ideas can be used to give accurate estimates of strength. Strength is discussed in the first part of this book without reference to equations of elastic deformation. However, the designer is concerned also with stiffness, for which elastic analysis is needed, and the standard equations (suitable, for example, for computer programming) are presented. Finally, stability is analyzed, which again is essentially an elastic phenomenon, and it is shown that a higher "factor of safety" is required to guard against buckling than that required to guarantee straightforward strength. The emphasis throughout is on the derivation and application of the structural equations, rather than on details of their solution (nowadays best done by computer), and the numerical examples are deliberately kept simple.

Since its first publication in 1974, Principles of Structure has established itself at the forefront of introductory texts for students of architecture, building and project management seeking a basic understanding of the behavior and design of building structures. It provides a simple quantitative introduction to structural engineering, while also drawing connections to real buildings that are more complex. Retaining the style and format of earlier editions, this Fifth Edition brings the text and examples into alignment with international practice. It also features six new buildings from around the world, illustrating the principles described in the text.

The book begins with a chapter explaining forces and their effects. Other chapters cover ties and struts, loadings, graphical statics, bracings, shears and moments, stresses, deflections, and beam design. There is also an appendix with a fuller explanation of fundamentals for readers unfamiliar with the basic concepts of geometry and statics.

The book offers a unique format with right-hand pages containing text and left-hand pages containing complementary commentary including explanations and expansions of points made in the text and worked examples. This cross-referencing gives readers a range of perspectives and a deeper understanding of each topic. The simple mathematical approach and logical progression—along with the hints and suggestions, worked examples and problem sheets—give beginners straightforward access to elementary structural engineering.

Analysis of Structures on Elastic Foundations is a practical guide for structural and geotechnical engineers as well as graduate students working in foundation engineering. The author provides practical methods of analysis and describes in detail various foundations, including simple beams on elastic foundations, and very complex foundations such as mat foundations supported on piles. Methods for fast and easy hand analysis in addition to methods for exact computer analysis are presented. Most of the methods are for three soil models: Winkler foundation, elastic half-space, and elastic layer. Numerical examples throughout the book illustrate the applications of these methods.

Key Features: -Offers simple formulas and tables for the analysis of beams free-supported on Winkler foundation and elastic half-space as well as applications to the analysis of complex beams and many types of continuous beams -Describes in detail the little-known method of initial parameters that allows the analysis of indeterminate systems with elements supported on Winkler foundation -Covers a new and very simple method of combined analysis of 2D and 3D frames with individual foundations by modeling the system soil-foundation with equivalent line elements and without requiring special software -Introduces a series of new methods/algorithms such as the analysis of composite beams and plates on elastic foundations, combined analysis of walls with continuous foundations, and combined analysis of walls supported on frames with continuous and individual foundations
