Siu-Lai Chan, Pui-Tak Chui ... This book is devoted to the discussion and studies of simple and efficient numerical procedures for large deflection and elasto-plastic analysis of steel frames under static and dynamic loading. In chapter 1, the basic fundamental behaviour and philosophy for design of structural steel is discussed, emphasising different modes of buckling and the inter-relationship between different types of analysis. In addition to this, different levels of refinement for non-linear analysis are described. An introduction is also given to the well-known P-&dgr; and P-&Dgr; effects. Chapter 2 presents the basic matrix method of analysis and gives several examples of linear analysis of semi-rigid pointed frames. It is evident from this that one must have a good understanding of first-order linear analysis before handling a second-order non-linear analysis. In chapter 3, the linearized bifurcation and second-order large deflection are compared and the detailed procedure for a second-order analysis based on the Newton-Raphson scheme is described. Chapter 4 introduces various solution schemes for tracing of post-buckling equilibrium paths and the Minimum Residual Displacement control method with arc-length load step control is employed for the post-buckling analysis of two and three dimensional structures. Chapter 5 addresses the non-linear behaviour and modelling of semi-rigid connections while several numerical functions for description of moment versus rotation curves of typical connection types are introduced. The scope of the work in chapter 6 covers semi-rigid connections and material yielding to the static analysis of steel frames. Chapter 7 studies the cyclic response of steel frames with semi-rigid joints and elastic material characteristics. In the last chapter the combined effects of semi-rigid connections and plastic hinges on steel frames under time-dependent loads are studied using a simple springs-in-series model. For computational effectiveness and efficiency, the concentrated plastic hinge concept is used throughout these studies.

Structural steel has been vital to engineering and construction over the past century. Its versatility has allowed it to perform outstandingly in countless applications. However, there have been repeated failures associated with fracture and/or fatigue mechanisms; the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the 1995 Kobe earthquake, and most recently the I-35W Mississippi River Bridge collapse in Minneapolis on August 1, 2007. These failures have highlighted concerns for the life of bridge structures particularly with regard to fatigue and corrosion. Although problems with fatigue and brittle have been well documented, these factors and issues have not yielded state-of-the-art design practices. The goal of Reducing Brittle and Fatigue Failures in Steel Structures is to provide a one-volume reference of failures in steel structures, along with considerations to preventing them. This book will give engineers a better understanding of steel and its limitations and applications, in order to reduce brittle and fatigue failures. This book will be a valuable resource for structural engineers, as well as professionals involved in bridge construction, design, and maintenance.

This is a completely revised, updated and reset edition of the text that appeared with the same title during the 1980s. It covers the requirements of the most recent design standards (BS5950, BS8110 and the Eurocodes) and will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students of civil and structural engineering and to practising engineers. Plastic behaviour and the methods for calculating the collapse load of steel structures are discussed and examined in detail. An explanation of the effects of deflections, instability and imperfections on the collapse of structures is followed by a description of the design methods for steel structures. The application of plastic methods to concrete structures and the yield line and strip methods for slabs are also presented. The coverage of both steel and concrete in the same volume is a unique feature of this text which will appeal to many readers. Throughout the book, the emphasis is on applications to modern analysis and design. Each chapter provides the background theory, followed by a series of carefully graded examples with many diagrams that illustrate application of the theory; the chapter concludes with a brief summary which is followed by a wide range of problems (with answers).

Recent earthquakes in many countries of the world have confirmed the potential for very large seismic events that until now were not forecast. The level of disturbance and destruction of highways and bridges as well as life, suffered during these dominant earthquakes were far greater than structural engineers and their associated design codes had predicted. One important lesson that has been learnt is that it is vital that bridges, which connect major transportation routes, must continue to function after an earthquake. . In the quest of this realization, new technologies and design efforts by engineers have resulted in the development of seismic protection systems, which include Shock Transmission Unit (STU) together with various seismic isolation and energy mitigation devices. In the only book to provide independent, non-proprietary information on the design and application of STUs, the author offers information on a wide range of different applications, including new and existing highway and railway bridges, as well as non-bridge structures such as nuclear power plants. Illustrated case studies included throughout, Shock Transmission Units in Bridge Engineering is written by a proven expert in STUs and the only world authority on the subject.
