Dry stone retaining structures are structures made of individual decimeter stone blocks in contact. One advantage of this construction technology lies in the weak amount of embodied energy required for their construction, and uses only local materials. This technology may be a positive answer to the challenges brought by sustainable policies in civil engineering.

Many of these structures are older than one hundred years and sustain damage due to ageing; this places the owners in front of a challenging issue. Usual scientific tools cannot address the specific behavior of such structures. Due to the discrete nature of the system, a large amount of energy can be dissipated at contact level before failure of the structure. The shape, arrangement and possible breakage of blocks may play a major role in their overall behavior, specific to these structures. This book brings an overview of the DEM technique to model the behavior of discrete civil engineering structures. Physical models, modeling and site measurements are all explored, helping the civil engineer evaluate the behavior of unique structures.

The only DEM technique to model the behavior of discrete civil engineering structures + A specific and sophisticated tool to address the general features observed on site + Details physical models, modeling and site measurements.

The third edition of a successful engineering text, Design of Liquid Retaining Concrete Structures clarifies the theoretical guidance given in the new suite of Eurocodes for the subject of retaining structures. The book qualifies the extensive set of guides in terms of the design of these structures and provides a clear path through the process. It still discusses structural elements individually so that expertise can be applied to any situation likely to be encountered. The modifications, such as changes to surface zones, the critical steel ratio, the maximum crack spacing (flexural and imposed strain) and edge restraint, that have been introduced into the Eurocodes are highlighted and discussed in detail.

The new suite of Eurocodes is claimed to be the most technically advanced codes in the world; the codes were developed with the intention of making them less restrictive than existing codes. The third edition reflects this philosophy by providing more theoretical background information and discussion, with specific reference to current and previous research, helping the reader to achieve a greater understanding and a wider application of the basic design guidance as the codes intended. As such the book remains a vital tool for practicing civil and structural engineers.

Geosolve GWALL v3.02, SLOPE v12.04, WALLAP v6.05 [Size: 15 MB] ... GWALL (Gravity and Cantilever Wall Analysis Program) analyses a wide range of retaining wall problems including gravity walls and cantilever walls with a base.

SLOPE is a program for analysing the stability of slopes. The program is also applicable to earth pressure and bearing capacity problems. Optional facilities are available for the analysis and design of reinforced soil.

WALLAP is a program for analysing the stability of cantilevered and propped retaining walls. WALLAP is suitable for the analysis of both temporary works, such as sheet pile walls, and permanent works such as reinforced concrete diaphragm walls and contiguous bored pile walls.

The foundation of structures and the construction of underground railways in urban areas would be impossible without the use of diaphragm walls, grouting, anchors, micropiles, slender retaining walls, etc. Based on the author's own experience and taking into account the findings of various other authors, this book explains these methods in an intelligible manner, enabling the reader to judge for himself their suitability in construction practice. The aim of the book is to instruct experts in the correct application of grouting methods, and the correct choice of drilling systems and tools. It provides mainly practical information, and describes the most suitable, up-to-date technology available. Grouting applications in Czechoslovakia and abroad are illustrated by a series of practical examples. The book is designed for students of civil engineering faculties specializing in structural foundation, specialists of building companies, and experts in structural foundation. It will also be appreciated by experts in underground railway and tunnel construction, in structural engineering and urban development (landslides), as well as by manufacturers of the respective technology.

Presents a systematic and comprehensive presentation of temporary excavation shoring and earth retention systems used to construct permanent facilities inside them. These systems are used to construct underground pipelines, tunnels, tank and storage facilities, foundations and structures. Each chapter presents a shoring system type description, how it is constructed, equipment requirements, cost analysis, etc. Safety, inspection and testing codes and methods included throughout. Written by an industry expert with three decades’ experience, this detailed handbook presents a systematic and comprehensive presentation of these complex systems.

Each chapter describes a type of shoring system and includes coverage of: How it is constructed and when the particular system should and should not be used * Equipment requirements, size, and tricks of the trade * Cost comparison * Engineering design principals and design methods *Codes and standards * Testing and inspection methods * And more... Invaluable to firms involved in earth excavation, geotechnical and structural engineers, field supervisors, as well as safety officers, here is the definitive reference for anyone involved in the process of earth retention.

The new ICE Specification for Piling and Embedded Retaining Walls is designed to be used as the new technical specification for piling and embedded walling works either on land or near to shore. It documents the latest piling techniques and procurement methods used in the foundations sector whilst incorporating the changes introduced by the new European Standards.
