Utilizing state-of-the-art software to facilitate solutions to real-world problems: Practitioners in the field of physical science are continually faced with a variety of complex, real-world problems, the solution of which requires a working knowledge of both analytical and numerical techniques. An Introduction to Mathematical and Computational Physics Using Mathematica® is designed to help prospective scientists develop a practical, working knowledge of these techniques using the latest, most efficient electronic methodologies. Written from the perspective of a physicist rather than a mathematician, the text focuses on modern practical applications in the physical and engineering sciences, attacking these problems with a range of numerical and analytical methods, both elementary and advanced. Incorporating the widely used and highly praised Mathematica® software package, the author offers solution techniques for the partial differential equations of mathematical physics such as Poisson’s equation, the wave equation, and Schrödinger’s equation, including Fourier series and transforms, Green’s functions, the method of characteristics, grids, Galerkin and simulation methods, elementary probability theory, and statistical methods. The incorporation of Mathematica® offers students a wealth of practical benefits in that it: Requires little or no previous computer experience + Offers maximum flexibility and sophistication + Delivers easy access to the important ideas behind the various numerical methods + Facilitates important but often tedious analytic calculations + Is easily adapted to the application of other related software packages. Designed for both advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the physical and engineering sciences, as well as professionals who want to learn these methods, An Introduction to Mathematical and Computational Physics Using Mathematica® is also provided electronically on an accompanying CD. The electronic version contains the full text of the book, along with animations, user-modifiable source code, and links to related Web material.

Steven J. Miller ... 327 pages - Publisher: American Mathematical Society; (December, 2017) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 1470441144 - ISBN-13: 978-1470441142.

Optimization Theory is an active area of research with numerous applications; many of the books are designed for engineering classes, and thus have an emphasis on problems from such fields. Covering much of the same material, there is less emphasis on coding and detailed applications as the intended audience is more mathematical. There are still several important problems discussed (especially scheduling problems), but there is more emphasis on theory and less on the nuts and bolts of coding. A constant theme of the text is the ``why'' and the ``how'' in the subject. Why are we able to do a calculation efficiently? How should we look at a problem? Extensive effort is made to motivate the mathematics and isolate how one can apply ideas/perspectives to a variety of problems. As many of the key algorithms in the subject require too much time or detail to analyze in a first course (such as the run-time of the Simplex Algorithm), there are numerous comparisons to simpler algorithms which students have either seen or can quickly learn (such as the Euclidean algorithm) to motivate the type of results on run-time savings.

Created to be user-friendly and easily understandable, Numerical Methods for Engineers and Scientists Using MATLAB® provides background material and a broad introduction to the essentials of MATLAB, specifically its use with numerical methods. Building on this foundation, it introduces techniques for solving equations and focuses on curve fitting and interpolation techniques. It addresses numerical differentiation and integration methods, presents numerical methods for solving initial-value and boundary-value problems, and discusses the matrix eigenvalue problem, which entails numerical methods to approximate a few or all eigenvalues of a matrix. The book then deals with the numerical solution of partial differential equations, specifically those that frequently arise in engineering and science. The book presents a user-defined function or a MATLAB script file for each method, followed by at least one fully worked-out example. When available, MATLAB built-in functions are executed for confirmation of the results. A large set of exercises of varying levels of difficulty appears at the end of each chapter. The concise approach with strong, up-to-date MATLAB integration provided by this book affords readers a thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of numerical methods utilized in various disciplines.

All of the material is presented from a matrix point of view with enough rigor for students to learn to compose arguments and proofs and adjust the material to cover other problems. The treatment includes optional subsections covering applications, and the final chapters move beyond basic matrix theory to discuss more advanced topics, such as decompositions, positive definite matrices, graphics, and topology. Filled with illustrations, examples, and exercises that reinforce understanding, Matrix Theory and Applications with MATLAB allows readers to experiment and visualize results in a way that no other text does. Its rigor, use of MATLAB, and focus on applications better prepares them to use the material in their future work and research, to extend the material, and perhaps obtain new results of their own.

Jim DeFranza, Daniel Gagliardi ... 416 pages - Publisher: McGraw-Hill; (September, 2008) ... Language: English - ISBN-10: 0073532355 - ISBN-13: 978-0073532356 ...

Linear Algebra with Applications is an introductory text targeted to second or advanced first year undergraduates in engineering or mathematics. The organization of this text is motivated by the authors' experience which tells them what essential concepts should be mastered by students in a one semester undergraduate Linear Algebra course. The authors' main objectives are to fully develop each topic before moving on and to connect topics naturally. The authors take great care to meet both these objectives, because this organization will allow instructors teaching from this text to stay on task so that each topic can be covered with the depth required before progressing to the next logical one. As a result the reader is prepared for each new unit and there is no need to repeat a concept in a subsequent chapter when it is utilized. This text is geared towards an introductory linear algebra course taken by first or second year undergraduate students. However, it offers the opportunity to introduce the importance of abstraction, not only in mathematics, but in many other areas where Linear Algebra is used. The textbook’s approach is to take advantage of this opportunity by presenting abstract vector spaces as early as possible. Throughout the text, the authors are mindful of the difficulties that students at this level have with abstraction and introduce new concepts first through examples which gently illustrate the idea. To motivate the definition of an abstract vector space, and the subtle concept of linear independence, the authors use addition and scalar multiplication of vectors in Euclidean Space. The authors have strived to create a balance between computation, problem solving, and abstraction. This approach equips students with the necessary skills and problem solving strategies in an abstract setting that allows for a greater understanding and appreciation for the numerous applications of the subject.

MATLAB Mathematical Analysis is a reference book that presents the techniques of mathematical analysis through examples and exercises resolved with MATLAB software. The purpose is to give you examples of the mathematical analysis functions offered by MATLAB so that you can use them in your daily work regardless of the application. The book supposes proper training in the mathematics and so presents the basic knowledge required to be able to use MATLAB for calculational or symbolic solutions to your problems for a vast amount of MATLAB functions. The book begins by introducing the reader to the use of numbers, operators, variables and functions in the MATLAB environment. Then it delves into working with complex variables. A large section is devoted to working with and developing graphical representations of curves, surfaces and volumes. MATLAB functions allow working with two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphics, statistical graphs, curves and surfaces in explicit, implicit, parametric and polar coordinates. Additional work implements twisted curves, surfaces, meshes, contours, volumes and graphical interpolation. The following part covers limits, functions, continuity and numerical and power series. Then differentiation is addressed in one and several variables including differential theorems for vector fields. Thereafter the topic of integration is handled including improper integrals, definite and indefinite integration, integration in multiple variables and multiple integrals and their applications. Differential equations are exemplified in detail, Laplace transforms, Tayor series, and the Runga-Kutta method and partial differential equations.
