Rey develops her newly discovered abilities with the guidance of Luke Skywalker, who is unsettled by the strength of her powers. Meanwhile, the Resistance prepares to do battle with the First Order.
Synopsis: Following on from Episode 7. The Resistance has to evacuate their base because the First Order is coming to destroy them. They make a hyperspace jump, but somehow the first order has tracked them and is now relentlessly shooting at them. They don't have enough fuel for another hyperspace jump, and no reason to jump since they can be tracked. Instead they get out of cannon range and put up their shields as they head toward an abandoned heavily armored Resistance base on a nearby dead planet. During this battle Kylo Ren has a chance to kill his mother but does not. In the meantime, Rey gives Luke his lightsaber, which he immediately tosses over his shoulder. He keeps to the faith that the Jedi are done, a relic, a failure, and must be done away with. He does give Rey a lesson or two, but he is scared because she has even more raw power than Ben Solo. The history between Luke and Ben is that Ben had too much dark stuff in him and Luke thought maybe he should kill him, but didn't, only Ben didn't know and so tried to kill Luke, burned down the Jedi temple, and left. Rey is convinced based on a vision that Kylo Ren will turn to the light, so she goes to Supreme Leader Snoke's ship and Kylo takes her to see Snoke. There Kylo kills the Supreme Leader, but only because he wants to take over, with Rey as his assistant.
She somehow escapes, because next we see of her she is shooting TIE Fighters out of the sky with Chewie from the Millennium Falcon. And this on the planet where the last few people from the Resistance are holed up. Just as they are about to all get killed Luke Skywalker shows up and walks out to meet Kylo Ren and the First Order army singlehanded. They blast him to smithereens but when the dust settles he is still there. So Kylo goes down to meet him, and they duel for awhile. Then Luke, once the few Resistance fighters have escaped out the back of the hideout and leave on the Millennium Falcon, lets Kylo stab him, only for Kylo to figure out he has been fighting a projection of Luke, who is actually still sitting on his little island somewhere. The projection must have taken all his energy, because he dies and disappears from the rock he is sitting on. There is also an ill-fated plot by Poe and Finn to deactivate the tracker in the Star Destroyer so the Resistance can escape via a hyperspace jump, but it leads to nothing but a statement that is perhaps the major theme of the movie: We succeed by saving what we love, not by destroying what we hate. Leia is still alive at the end of the movie.
